Internship Log

Week 05

Name of Trainee: Zahra Khan Reg # 2014BM24

Date of Report: 28-02-2018 Section: 01

Internship site: Thumbay Hospital, Ajman

What were your job responsibilities this past week? What specific tasks were involved?

The first week at the Thumbay hospital, Ajman began with briefing on phlebotomy procedure and
introduction to the laboratory by Dr. Pervaiz, the supervisor. Dr. Pervaiz explained the sequence of reading
the prepared peripheral blood films. I was asked to observe and look for the case with marked findings of
polychromasia. I got the patient’s clinical condition, reported on the patient's peripheral blood film, and
followed up the case for further testing to be done.

I was posted in the phlebotomy room for first 2 hours, where I was given the task of providing the reports
to the patients. I assisted for pediatric blood collection and performed it on my colleague independently.

The rest of the day I was posted in the laboratory section, I received the sample in LDM. I handled the CBC
samples, practiced preparing smears, and blood grouping with the gel type method. Blood grouping was
demonstrated by Mr. Ryan, along with assigning samples to be tested. Ms. Jericca briefly updated on the
storage of samples collected in the laboratory.

Dr. Pervaiz assigned me to study my friend's sample that I had drawn for hematology testing, wherein I
performed CBC, prepared peripheral smear of it and reported it. This was discussed as a case, suggesting
differential diagnosis and the follow up.
