Police are a constituted body of persons who are empowered by the state to enforce
law to protect the lives, liberty and possession of citizens and to prevent crime and
civil disorders. These power include power of arrest and the legitimized use of
force.
Not all police agencies are alike. This is because they differ in scope of their
routine enforcement responsibility in the territorial and population size of their
jurisdiction, composition of population they serve in size training and salaries.
Also not all police officers are alike and they differ in background, personality, and
experience, and attitude, behavior in work, qualifications and interest.
These police officers are trained in schools established by the government with
also well trained personnel to offer skills to the newly enrolled officers.
The officers are trained on how to handle and use weapons e.g. riffles, bombs,
pistols and trained on methods of self-defense in case they are in danger. They also
do a lot of exercise in this training and it helps to improve their physical fitness.
There are several police training colleges in Kenya e.g. Embakasi B campus which
trains the administration police, Magadi field campus which trains GSU officers,
Kiganjo police training college which trains Kenya police, DCI academy located in
South C in Nairobi which offers training in matters of investigation to the CID
officers.
Police are a constituted body of persons who are empowered by the state to enforce
law to protect the lives, liberty and possession of citizens and to prevent crime and
civil disorders.
Police play a big role in the society. They detect and bring offenders to justice and
apprehending all persons who the police officer is legally authorized to apprehend.
Police also enter and inspect any drinking shop, gaming house or other places of
resort of arose and disorderly characters and take them for rehabilitation. This is
done in order to promote peace and order in the society.
They take into custody any person without a warrant who commits crime and
afterwards they present the arrested person to the nearest magistrate within a
period of 24 hours from the time of arrest. After investigation of the case they
prepare the charge-sheet and send it to the court for trial within a stipulated period.

They keep order on public roads, streets, landing places and at all other places of
public resort and preventing obstructions on the occasions of assemblies and
process on the public roads and in any other place.
They collect and communicate intelligence affecting the public peace to the
competent authority. This is done in order to protect the rights of citizens.
They also prevents the commission of offenses and public nuisance.
The police have the responsibility to gun down any armed robbers. These robbers
are threat to the society and even the police. These robbers are armed with guns,
knives and even machetes and they do kill people without mercy. For example, in
Nairobi where most of the young men do engage in crime armed with pistols and
knifes but they are killed by the police because they are threat to the law abiding
citizens and even the police themselves.
The police also do recover guns from unlicensed gun-holders. These guns when in
the wrong hands they may be used to kill and steal from the un-armed citizens. For
example in Nairobi undercover cops do carry out investigations on daily bases and
know the people who possess these guns illegally. One is required to submit the
firearm to the nearest police station failure to which one faces the full force of the
law as he/she is a threat to the citizens.
They lay any information before a magistrate and apply for a summon, warrant,
search warrant or such other legal processes against any person committing
offence. They also take charge of unclaimed property and disposing it subject to
the magistrate orders.
They regulate public assemblies and processions and licensing of the same. They
stop any process that violates the conditions of a license.
In conclusion, it is the duty of the police to maintain law and order across the
country at all times.
