There is nothing quite like an election.

Whether it be the general election or a local election, it provides our
community with the opportunity to play a part in democracy. One aspect
where local elections struggle to compare with general elections though is
voter turnout.
At the last election, only 54.1% of eligible voters in the Queenstown Lakes
District took part and voted. This was up about 8% on the previous election
in 2013 and I would encourage those of you who didn’t vote last time to
make sure you do this year.
Whether your priorities are water quality or infrastructure in your area, the
amount you pay in rates or many other issues ongoing in the area, the only
way to ensure your priorities are covered is to vote.
Of the three mayoral candidates, or 10 Queenstown candidates, or six
Wanaka candidates, some will share your priorities, others may not. The key
is to know who they are and what they stand for, and their election profiles

I feel so very fortunate to live in the
Queenstown Lakes area, surrounded by the
beautiful outdoors. We are all passionate
about maintaining and improving our
environment. In fact, I think we pride
ourselves on looking after our surroundings.
Clean air, open spaces, pristine lakes and
rivers... and rabbits. Rabbits everywhere.
Our wonderful walks and cycleways are being
taken over by the rabbits – their burrows are
seriously compromising the land, evidenced
by the copious burrows throughout our
green areas. And they don’t stop there. They
are invading our back yards, living under our
decks, destroying our plants and lawns.
Response from an ORC Spokesperson
Feral rabbits are the number one pest in
Otago. They are famed breeders, able to
rebound quickly from control pressures, and
they compete with farm animals for pasture
and crop and cause land degradation. They
can have long-term impacts on water quality-
by causing soil erosion-and indigenous
biodiversity.
Rabbits are included in ORC’s current and
new Pest Plan for sustainable control, and
Caltex – Example of the most efficient
distribution business.
After the Saudi oil facilities were blown up
last weekend and the price of the remaining
crude skyrocketed it took Caltex only 3
days to buy, ship, refine and truck the new
supplies from Saudi Arabia to Queenstown
in order to increase the price at the pump
dramatically. Between Saturday and Tuesday
the price in Gorge Road went from $2.20 a

What is the Council doing to address this?
I know that rabbit control is complex, and
best practice is believed to be a combination
of baiting and shooting. Not easy. But not
impossible. My understanding is that Council
is doing neither of these things. Are they
doing anything at all? Please someone tell me
that they are? Looking at a recent breakdown
of our rates, it appears not. We have an
array of charges, ranging from recreation
and event charges to uniform annual general
charges... Where is the allowance for pest
control?? The rabbit population continues to
grow, Council continues to do nothing.

Last week’s editorial on recycling
had some comments which require
clarification.
Reprocessing of our glass in Auckland
• 130 tonnes of glass from Queenstown
and Wanaka have been sent to OI in
Auckland for reprocessing into glass
bottles and jars. More glass is at the
bunkers in Christchurch, ready to go to
Auckland once another shipping container
is full.
Heavily contaminated glass
• If a truckload of glass recycling is too
heavily contaminated to be manually
handled at the bunkers, it will be sent to
landfill so that the rest of our glass will
meet the recycling quality standards.
• 4 truckloads of Queenstown glass
contaminated by rubbish and mixed
recycling have been sent to landfill since
the service started on 1 July.
• 1 loader bucket of glass from Wanaka
contaminated by mirror and window-glass
has been sent to landfill.
• Council and Waste Management will
carry out audits targeting the most
contaminated neighbourhoods first. This
will make sure that people doing a good
job with their recycling are not negatively
impacted by neighbours who aren’t
looking after their recycling.

During Mental Health Awareness month, Deborah Coburn will
be holding the Teenage Girls Day Out and Women on The Move
seminars. Deborah has been presenting these courses for over
the past 20 years. With a focus on building confidence and self-
esteem, it’s a great programme that teaches valuable skills to
counter the negative messages young woman are surrounded by
in today’s technology driven world.
The day is spent with the morning enhancing inner confidence,
the programme then given the participants the opportunity to
shine on the outside as well. The Crew Styling team take over for
the afternoon, hosting a makeover session of Hair and Makeup.
Deborah takes a deportment and breathing session. Then a photo
shoot with Still Vision Photography is the finishing touch to a
transformative day out.
One recent participant had this to say: “I really enjoyed the course
and I got a lot of helpful information and tools out of it. The hair
and makeup was so much fun. I felt really confident afterward and
getting the pictures was really fun.”
The Teenage Girls Day Out also gives businesses the opportunity
to sponsor young women in the community for the daylong
seminar, a fantastic way to give back to the community and
acknowledge Mental Health Awareness week. Collective Courses
sponsor young women through the Wakatipu Youth Trust.
Deborah has always wanted to reach people and has a passion
for mindful living and creating a life which brings joy. She offers
seminars which are relatable and informative with practical
everyday tools included. Training in personal deportment and
grooming as well as being a qualified NLP practitioner (Neuro
and Language skills) combine with Deborah’s skills as a business
woman which has enabled her to deliver courses that can produce
major change in people’s lives.

with the right life skills, they can change their lives and develop
better relationships in all aspects of their lives.”

It’s Saturday night and I’m very excited to be going up the

gondola to the Skyline AGM. It might not be as exciting as it
was when I was a teenager in my last year at Wakatipu High
School as I’m going with my elderly husband and even more
elderly dad. In my younger wilder years, host responsibility
and drunken driving weren’t “THINGS” . I don’t remember if
I told my parents I was going there - I probably lied and said I
was going to do homework with friends. They would probably
have thought I couldn’t afford it but clever old Skyline did a
special Sunday night deal for locals - $2 got you the gondola
ride up and back AND a free alcoholic drink. Drunken tourists
were very happy to buy us 17 year old girls further posh
drinks like Kahlua and milk - such fun!!. Sometimes the band
would announce that anyone under 20 might like to hide
away as the only policeman (the terrifying Sergeant Moloney)
looking after all of Queenstown, Wanaka, Glenorchy and
Gibbston was heading up in the gondola.
We’d have to run outside and shiver in our small dresses for
what felt like hours till he went away. Then after our night of
dancing and drinking, we’d all head down and hop into cars
without seatbelts or airbags and race each other home on icy
roads. Oh, and go to school the next morning.
How on earth did we survive? and how do terrible things
happen on beautiful sunny days like today? I just heard the
horrible news that Anita Graf has died in a skiing accident
- she was often up the Skyline with us living that fun and
dangerous life. I took a photo of her last night dressed up as
a cowgirl off to a linedancing party and she was so happy. Big
hugs to all your beautiful family, Anita and hope wherever you
are there is fabulous skiing and a lot of fun parties. However,
I really doubt that it can be better than life in the Wakatipu
Basin - especially in spring - I’ll always think of you when I see
daffodils now.
Spring is definitely in the air - head to Arrowtown and see
what a group of local floral artists have done - it’s a riot of
blossom and it will be well worth checking out the Spring
Flower Show there on Friday - as well as all the cut flower
entries, there are classes for baking and children (do not
bake the children!) and the bring and buy sales tables will be
groaning with bargains.
If you aren’t a member of ACAS already , pick up the Spring
Arts Festival programme at the Lakes District Museum. I wish
there was something I DIDN’T want to go to...

The season kicks off with the first-ever Spring Market to be held on
the Big Fruit Reserve on Saturday, 29 September. This is the ideal
opportunity to get a head-start on your Christmas shopping or to find
that something special for your home. The market will be abuzz from
9 am to 2 pm with more than 70 craft and food stalls in the mix.

The Cromwell Half Marathon, 10k and Teams Relay is one of the
most scenic runs in New Zealand, taking athletes around the shores
of beautiful Lake Dunstan. This is a family-friendly event that is

speedway race cars be part of this Saturday’s Alexandra Blossom Grand
Procession, the evening’s $1500 Burnout competition at Central Motor
Speedway in Cromwell is already attracting some 20 competitors from places as
far away as the Hawkes Bay.
