The COMPLETE

cattle shed

Foreword

Dear Sir or Madam,

In Bavaria, producing and processing milk

is a vital branch of production within
the agriculture and food sector. The
Allgäu - one of the most important milk
regions in Germany, and Europe for that
matter - lies in the centre of Bavaria. Our
company headquarters in Buchloe/East
Allgäu is situated at the foot of the Alps in
one of the most densely cattle-populated
regions of Germany.

Where else can you gain more experience in constructing cattle sheds
than where the demand for them is greatest. By tradition, the Allgäu
has a great deal of experience in dairy farming, and HÖRMANN has a
great deal of experience in building cattle sheds. Rudolf Hörmann laid
the company’s foundations as early as 1960 with the production of
sliding gates for dairy cattle, thereby creating the basis for more than
50 years of specialised knowledge.

Today, HÖRMANN is the top choice for complete cattle shed solutions.
We are one of the few production companies in Germany able to provi-
de you with a complete cattle shed from a single source – starting from
the foundations, to construction, roofing, light/air roof ridge vent, ma-
nure removal systems, doors, gates, and shed facilities, right through to
suitable outhouses. Choose HÖRMANN – The COMPLETE cattle shed.

We don’t just build ONE barn to suit all purposes – we build the ONE
barn that exactly fulfils your individual, climatically-dependent, regio-
nal and economical requirements, keeping the comfort of your cattle in
mind and helping to enhance their performance. Please do not hesitate
to contact us if you have any questions. If you would like a local consult,
a member of our field staff will be glad to visit you. If you have a vision
of the perfect cattle shed, we’ll build it for you.

We hope that reading the rest of the leaflet will help you find inspirati-
on. My team and I look forward to hearing from you!

Company profile

Established some 50 years ago, our second-

generation family business has made a name
for itself as one of the leading experts in the
construction of agricultural buildings.

At our production sites in Germany and Austria,

and in the Swiss branch office, our team consists
of some 450 employees, each with major expe-
rience in the planning, building and equipping of
cattle sheds. We have our own planning office,
concrete, timber and metal works and develop a
great variety of patents and own-name products.

Thousands of farmers both in Germany and

abroad place great value on HÖRMANN sheds
and shed facilities; they are not only convinced
by our excellent quality, but they also pass
the word along. We have field staff situated
throughout the whole of Germany, Austria
and Switzerland and we are also involved in a
number of shed-construction projects in other
countries. All products are manufactured at
our plants in Germany and Austria, supporting
the local employment market and making our
business independent, flexible and fast.

The milk-production, health and fertility of

the animals can only be increased if the “shed”
environment is geared towards catering to
their needs and general well-being. When
constructing new buildings and remodelling
old buildings, we place particular focus on one
thing: cow comfort is a prerequisite for high
productivity and excellent results. That is why
it’s worth investing in a HÖRMANN cattle shed!

From the planning process through to comple-

tion, we are your competent partner for all your
needs: ranging from high-quality, durable and
perfectly coordinated cattle sheds, to intelligent
equipment, foundations, manure removal
systems, and a suitable gate, right down to
that small important detail. Should you wish to
do the work yourself, we are at your side with
expert advice and support, and we will be glad
to use your own timber in the construction of
your future cattle shed.

Solutions for remodelling and extending

If you intend to use an existing building, this requires the particularly
intensive support and advice of our field staff. The critical factors are

into consideration. Below we have presented a few solutions for many
different alternatives.

Milking parlours

A simple single-pitch roof shed with a holding area along the side is a low-cost solution and is characterised by a good cross-ventilation system with a
row of adjustable clerestory windows.

Calf, calving and selection areas can be

The narrow design means that a variety of structures and roofing solutions are possible. Here, saw-tooth roofs or open roof ridges are low-cost
alternatives.

Multiple-roomed sheds

Low-cost trapezoidal steel roofing laid cross-

We can construct multiple-roomed buildings

with simple designs and low roof ridges.
The low span widths and open-plan design

For medium snow loads, additional interior struts are necessary. This
structure is not a sensible option where there are heavy snow loads.

Corrugated sheets can absorb moisture and are therefore particularly
suitable for cold-housing sheds. As many transparent roofing sheets
as required can be integrated into the roof surface. The truss/purlin
structure is simple and inexpensive.

“Sliding roof ridge vent – one-sided”

Vent opening max. 1.40 m

The sliding roof ridge vent has the largest ventilation opening. The one-
sided version achieves a ventilation cross-section area of approx 1.20
m. Optional - the other side of the roof ridge can be fitted with fixed
transparent roofing sheets.

“Sliding roof ridge vent”

Vent opening 2.65 m

The sliding roof ridge vent offers a maximum ventilation cross-section

area. In wide cattle sheds, the high light incidence is advantageous.

36
“ML raisable roof ridge vent”

Vent opening 2.65 m

Optimum exhaust air extraction by opening at the highest point of the

cattle shed, yet the cover plate still provides protection from the rain.
In extreme weather conditions, the cover plate can be lowered using
a crank and cogwheel system. The ML raisable roof ridge vent can be
used in snowy regions as no wind deflectors are required.

“Saw-tooth roof” approx. 1.00 m – 1.70 m

Vent opening approx.

0.30 m – 0.60 m

A saw-tooth roof can be added as an attachment to a normal double-pitch roof structure.

The staggered positioning of the two roof

halves is the simplest version of a saw-tooth
roof. In this model, an interior support has to
be installed in the ridge area. Depending on
local weather conditions, it may be advisable
to add a wind deflector.

“Tabletop roof ridge vent”

Vent opening
max. 80 cm

Wind deflectors should also be mounted at the opening of an open roof

ridge as protection against the elements. The tabletop roof ridge vent
is the most reasonably priced option if more rain protection is required.

feed table, we recommend using a remote
control device.

Roll-up doors are made of specially-coated

weather-resistant synthetic fibres. They
are wind-repellent and ensure a fresh-air
supply without drafts. They are anti-static
and prevent dust attachment. A flexible
mounting and fastening technique makes
them also extremely tear-resistant. They can
be operated either manually or with a motor
winch.

necessary for wall or ceiling attachment have
already been punched into the galvanised
mounting rail. The individual strips can be
easily removed, exchanged or attached with
a smaller or larger overlap, if required.

54
If the 1½" self-locking feed yoke is fitted with
an extra swing arm, the animals find it easier
to feed and are able to eat more, and there is
more protection from injury.

Up to 50 feeding spaces can be operated with

one deadbolt lock.

Floor coverings for cubicles and walking alleys

The system that has been common practice in the rearing of young
stock for a long time is increasingly being implemented in dairy
farming. The raised-floor stall that is both labour- and time-saving
can be fitted with low-cost and at the same time extremely high-
quality, comfortable rubber mats. These comfortable and skid-
proof floor coverings make it easier to maintain hygienic conditions
in the lying area and comply with all animal maintenance regu-
lations. HÖRMANN customers can choose from the large range of
products supplied by our partner GUMMIWERK in Kraiburg.

Kura-S and Kura-P rubber mats increase skid resistance and are
exceptionally claw-friendly. The mats are individually cut to size for
each slatted floor. On solid walking areas, such as manure alleys,
individual mats are seamlessly fitted together. The investment in
animal-friendly walking areas is well worth the expense.

Tie-stall barns

The double-hinged C-shaped neck frame is

a typical tie for grazing cattle. The powder-
coated plastic cover is extremely durable and
animal-friendly. The columns are generally
double-strength. The stall bars can be fitted
with a particularly animal-friendly rubber
feed restraint.

The Grabner tie is suitable for the permanent

housing of dairy cows or young stock in she-
ds. For grazing cattle, solid cast iron bearings
are mounted onto the columns. The double-
strength nylon strap allows the animals more
freedom of movement.

The neck rail tie is an economical solution

that enables great freedom of movement in
normal position. By twisting the neck rail,
the animals can be more firmly secured for
milking. Group release for grazing possible.

Customised buildings

The barn, auction room and outhouses of the livestock auction building in Wertingen were all built by the HÖRMANN company.

At the insemination centre in Greifenberg,

buildings and shed facilities were manu
factured and installed according to very
particular requirements.

The shed, plus all the necessary equipment,

was implemented for the BLT in Grub. In
this experiment, the weight gain during the
fattening process of animals housed in fully
slatted floor systems was compared with
the weight gain of those animals housed in a
sloped floor system.
