Question

1. According to the dress code, what should you wear in the laboratory?
Regarding to the dress code, the students should wear proper dresses in the laboratory. When
in the laboratory, Personal protective equipment such as lab coat, covered shoes and google are
always necessary to protect the students from chemical exposure and other hazard. The lab
coat will protect the skin and body and the google also needed to be worn when carry out the
experiment to avoid the chemical from splash into our eyes. Gloves also should be worn when
handling the chemical to protect the skin contact with corrosive chemicals. Other than that,
close toe shoes must be worn in the lab to avoid any foot injuries during experiment. Lastly,
face mask should be worn to avoid the problem to our respiratory system and prevent the
splashes of chemicals at our face.

2. What type of goggles should you wear and when should you wear them?
General safety glasses.

 Must have side shields, or a one-piece lens that wraps around the temple.
 Area the minimum level of eye protection that must be worn in the laboratory.
 Are not effective in protecting the eyes from splashes, and are only recommended for use with
solutions that are not likely to damage the eye, such as some buffers and salts.

Chemical splash goggles.

 Are recommended any time a splash of chemicals or infectious substances could reach the eyes.
 Can act as impact goggles to prevent flying piece from reaching the eyes.

Impact goggles.
 Offer protection from flying debris only.
 Often have ventilation holes on the sides that render the user susceptible to chemical splashes and
dust or small debris.

Face shield

 Required when splashes from chemicals that can cause immediate skin damage are handled such
as working with concentrated acids, dispensing liquid nitrogen and sonicating tissue samples.
 Shall be worn in conjunction with chemical splash goggles. Respiratory protective equipment
might be required, depending on the task.

3. In what cases might you be asked to leave the laboratory?

There are several cases that will cause the students are asked to leave the laboratory which are
when the students do not follow the dress code established in the laboratory regulations and
eating or drinking in the laboratory during the lab period or while the experiment is carry out
also will be asked to leave the laboratory immediately. Furthermore students who do not
behave properly during experiments conducted will be advised to leave the laboratory and if
any case if applicable misfortune such as a fire in the lab, students will be directed to leave the
lab.

4. Can you wear contact lenses? Why?

Cannot, because it can cause serious injuries and blindness. Contact lenses is made up from
specific plastic that is permeable to some vapour that found in laboratory. These vapour most
probably trapped behind the lenses. In addition, if there was any accident which is corrosive
liquid splash in the eye. The natural reflex to clamp the eyelids shut makes it difficult to
remove the lenses before damage is done.
5. What should you do if?
a) You broke a beaker and cut your finger.
Report all accidents no matter how minor to the instructor immediately.

b) Chemicals have splashed on your face.

Wash your hand as often as possible, especially before leaving the lab. Be careful not to touch
your eyes or other body areas without thoroughly washing your hands first.

c) The fire alarm sounds.

Leave the laboratory area immediately if fire alarm sounds.

d) Your lab manual has caught on fire.

Used the blanket to extinguish the flames.

e) Your shirt has caught on fire.

Immediately dropdown and roll on the floor to extinguish the flames.

f) Chemicals have spilled on your pants.

Wash it off immediately under the safety shower and remove any contaminated clothing.
