Course Description: Civil engineering and construction management as professions. Provides

an introduction to ethical practice, curricula, and engineering careers. Students will be
introduced to the fundamentals of civil and construction engineering problem solving and
design.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Create an academic plan leading to graduation from the School of Civil and Construction
Engineering; and, list university and COE resources for student success.
2) Demonstrate knowledge of engineering as a profession with an emphasis on civil and
construction engineering, including: the professional registration process, the role of ethics
in professional practice, and various engineering disciplines and careers.
3) Work as a productive member of a team.
4) Use common engineering problem solving methods and tools (units, dimensional analysis,
trigonometry, sketching)
5) Demonstrate the use of standard software to: perform engineering calculations, prepare
technical documents, communicate, and retrieve technical information.

Examinations: Midterm, Final Exam. Date/Time TBD

Grading Policy:
Assignment Type Percentage of Course Grade
Attendance/Participation 5%
Homework/Projects 30%
Course Binder 5%
Term Project 20%
Midterm Exam 20%
Final Exam 20%

Course Grading:
Final grades will be assigned as letter grades, as follows:
Percentage Grade
92-100% A
90-92 A-
88-90 B+
82-88 B
80-82 B-
78-80 C+
70-78 C
60-70 D
Below 60 F

Homework Policy:
Students must do the homework problems in order to learn the material.
Homework will be assigned each week in lecture/recitation and is expected from every student
one week later in class. Late assignments will not be accepted without a valid excuse. Penalties
for late assignments will be assessed depending on the circumstances.
All work will be done in a neat, well organized, professional manner as follows:
1) Pencil and engineering paper will be used.
2) All work will be printed or legibly written.
3) Only one side of the paper will be used.
4) Problem sets will be stapled at upper left corner.
5) Course number, date, student's name and page number will be shown at the top of
each sheet.
6) Problem number and a problem statement will appear before each problem. The
problem statement should include the essence of what is given, what you are to find
and a figure when appropriate.
7) Problem solution must be presented in a logical, orderly fashion, including
fundamental equations used and sufficient (but brief) text to explain procedure.
8) Answers will be underlined or boxed. The answer must include the correct units and
show an appropriate number of significant figures.

Class Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. You are expected to attend every class and
participate. If you are unable to attend for a good reason, notify the instructor before that class.
If you do miss class, it is your responsibility to find out from another student what was covered
and any administrative information presented.

Students with Disabilities:

Accommodations are collaborative efforts between students, faculty and Services for Students
with Disabilities (SSD). Students with accommodations approved through SSD are responsible for
contacting the faculty member in charge of the course prior to or during the first week of the
term to discuss accommodations. Students who believe they are eligible for accommodations
but who have not yet obtained approval through SSD should contact SSD immediately at 737-
4098.

Academic Integrity:
Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is
defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas: cheating- use or
attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids; fabrication- falsification or
invention of any information; assisting- helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty;
tampering- altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents; plagiarism-
representing the words or ideas of another person as one's own. For more information about
academic integrity and the University's policies and procedures in this area, you are welcome to
