Name of Instructor : Alaa Ba-abbad

AIM: - To determine flash point of the given oil sample.

THEORY:

Definition: flash point is the lowest temperature at which the oil sample gives off
enough vapors that ignite for a moment when tiny flame is brought near it.

When the product is heating oil rising concentration of vapors above the liquid phase
and rises with the pressure of saturated vapors of the product. Sufficient rise in
temperature leads to the arrival of the concentration of hydrocarbon vapors to a
consistent limits with air. When passing the flame above the vapors happen ignite for
a moment which quickly extinguished when the flame away from the sample .
flash point of petroleum products depends:-

1- Product installation.

2- boiling point.

3- vapor pressure.

4- the degree of volatility (which indirectly refers to the amount of light components
located inside the liquid).

generally The flash point Refers to value of initial boiling point as the following
relation:

Flash point = IBP – 100

Where IBP and flash point at C0

The table below have the values of flash point for petroleum products:-

petroleum products Flash point

Benzene Below 0 Co may be arrive to 50Co

Kerosene 26 Co – 60 Co

Diesel 30 Co – 120 Co

lubricating oil 130 Co – 320 Co

PROCEDURE:

The material is filled in the cup up to a filing mark. the lid is placed to close the cup in
a close system. All accessories including thermometer of the specified range are
suitably fixed. The oil sample is then heated . the heating is done at the rate of 5C o to
6Co per minute. The stirring is done at a rate of approximately 60 revolution per
minute. The test flame is applied at intervals depending upon the expected flash point
. first application is made at least 17 Co below the actual flash point and then at every
1 Co to 3 Co.
