Task 1
1. Scissors is a tool to cut something, such as paper, fabric, etc. commonly
used in offices, households, and even industries.
2. Foot pump is a mechanism to pump-up the tyres or balloons. When you
step on it, it generates air to pump objects.
3. Locking pliers is a mechanism to hold or lock things. Usually used in
mechanical engineering to fix or modify machines.
4. Edge-trimmer is a mechanism to cut the edge of paper. It is usually used in
the offices.
5. Tap is a mechanism that allows water or any other kinds of liquid to flow
when its valve opened.
Task 3
Task 3 1. Cam converts the rotary motion of the engine into the reciprocating motion
(answer) required to operate the valves.
2. Oscillating: swings backwards and forwards
3. Plastic pipes can be created by machines that provide the forces to force
plastic through dies to make pipes
4. Rotary
5. To convert the reciprocating motion into a rotary motion.
6. The linear movement of a paper trimmer is used to cut the edge of the
paper.
7. Car body panels can be formed by using machines that generate forces to
press steel sheets into car body panels.
8. Mechanisms in industry provide the power to do a work.
Task 4
1. Copper is highly conductive, so it’s used for electric wiring. (result)
2. Weight is measured in newtons, meanwhile mass is measured in kilograms.
3. Nylon is used for bearings because it’s self-lubricating. (reason)
4. ABS has high impact strength, so it’s used for safety helmets. (result)
5. The foot pump is a class 2 lever since the load is between the effort and the
fulcrum. (reason)
6. Frictions is essential in brakes, but it’s a nuisance in an engine. (contrast)
7. The upper surface of a beam is in compression, meanwhile the lower one is
in tension.
8. Concrete beams have steel rods near the lower surface; therefore, concrete
is weak in tension. (result)
Task 5
