CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

In our times, issues and problem are clear and visible. Everywhere we go,

problems are seeable. It may be in our houses, offices and school. In school,

academic performance is a must. Students tend to work and study day by day and

it is obvious that as time goes by, student performance are improving. They tend

to give their best, regardless of the subject.

As the time goes by, academic performance became the basis of intelligence

(Amirtha & Jebaseelan,2014). People tend to look often to the academic

performance in order to classify the student whether intelligent or not.

According to Ballotpedia.org (2014), Academic performance is the measurement

of student achievement across various academic subjects. Teachers and education

officials typically measure achievement using classroom performance, graduation

rates and results from standardized tests. Academic performance can be affected

by different factors. These are socio-economic factors, parent factors, peer factors,

school factors.

Despite of the fact that academic performance and intelligence are way too

far from each other, there are still persons who are inter-correlating it. Academic
S AN LORENZO RUIZ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

performance is way too shallow to be a basis. Needlessly to say, there are several

factors to consider. One of these is the students learning behavior.

Learning behavior is a mental readiness of the students to learn in which

indicates their resourcefulness, creative thinking and imaginative activities, love

for their learning, high interest of reading and writing and also having better

psychological adjustments in class and school. (Saxena, 2002).

Same with Academic Performance, learning behavior depends on various

things. Example of these are the whole environment of the school, the atmosphere,

climate and weather, teacher’s involvement and also the influence of their

classmates.

Studies like, 'How can behavior affects academics of students' (Thompson

V, 2014), talks about how student’s behavior affects their academics. There are

also similar studies by Ning, H.K and Downing, K (2010), Ralph A.T et al., (2010),

that also examines the same matter.

Therefore, we, researchers need to answer a question, what is the

relationship between students learning behavior and academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

The main objective of this research is to determine the relationship between

students’ learning behavior and level of academic performance among grade 11

HUMSS school year 2019-2020. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 sex and

1.2 age?

2. What is the level of learning behavior as perceived by the student-respondents

in terms of:

2.1 environment of the school;

2.2 influence of their classmates; and

2.3 teacher’s involvement?

3. What is the level of students-respondents academic performance?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the students-respondents perceived

learning behavior and level of academic performance?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the learning behavior and the

level of academic performance among Grade 11 HUMSS students in San Lorenzo

Ruiz Senior High School

Scope and Delimitation

The objective of this study is to provide information regarding the

relationship between the learning behavior and level of academic performance

among Grade 11 HUMSS students. This study considered the students’ personal

information such as their sex and age.

The respondents of this research are randomly selected male and female

coming from grade 11 HUMSS Students of San Lorenzo Ruiz Senior High School.

Each of the respondents were given a questionnaire to answer. The respondents

of this study are selected 40 students who will willingly and honestly answer the

survey questionnaire to prevent bias and get objective.

Significance of the Study

Students. This research will help the students be aware about the relationship

of academic performance with their learning behavior.

S AN LORENZO RUIZ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Teachers. This research will help the teachers and guide them on how are they

going to assess the students once they are already informed about the relationship

of students learning behavior and academic performance.

Parents. This study will help the parents to monitor their children’s academic

performance and discipline them if they are misbehaving towards their school.

Future Researchers. This research is beneficial to the researchers because they

can use this as their guide in the future study.

Definition of Terms

HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Students. They are the

respondents of this study.

Learning Behavior. The act on how the student behave during class hours. It is

the mental readiness of student to learn which indicates their resourcefulness and

creative thinking.

Students learning behavior. Students behavior can affect her ability to learn

as well as other students learning environment. students who behave disruptively

by bullying other students talking during lectures or by requiring the teacher to

interrupt lessons to discipline them can have a negative effect on an entire

classroom.
S AN LORENZO RUIZ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Academic performance. It is the basis on how the teacher will measure the

performance of the student towards school. It is the extent to which a student

teachers or institution has achieved their short- or long-term educational goals.

The relationship of students learning behavior and academic

performance. A student behavior can affect his/her ability to learn as well as

other students learning environment. Among a variety of factors such as teacher

involvement, parental investment, school quality and student motivation affecting

the academic life of student, it is student academic behavior which plays a major

role in academic achievement.

Student’s Learning Behavior

When analyzing the behavior concern within schools many researchers

agreed that discipline is not a new issue, it has been an ongoing problem for

centuries. Public Agenda conducted a survey in which 97% of teachers agreed that

schools need discipline and behavior to grow (Public Agenda, 2004). Children

quickly become influenced by negative atmosphere that surrounds them.

“Gradually students come to feel no moral discredit in rule violation and grow

unresponsive to discipline.”(Goodman, 2007, p.4) Although teachers enforce

classroom rules and other disciplinary approaches, as Goodman stated, “explicit

rules, clear authority, proportionate sanctions, administered equitably, and group

participation are important but insufficient.”(Goodman, 2007, p.5). In order for

positive behavior to be effective the students have to think twice before acting out

or repeating the disruptive or similar behaviors. The introduction of character

S AN LORENZO RUIZ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

education is beneficial to all parties involved; as educators we learn more about

our students and the students are giving the information needed to develop

character and morals. Children see their surrounding world and develop their

character based on what they see and what they are taught. Rynders (2006)

supports this belief by stating “we have choices in our lives, and we make those

choices based upon what we know.” (Rynders, 2006, p.215).

Academic Performance

According to Balotpedia (n.d.) “Academic performance is the measurement

of student achievement across various academic subjects. Teachers and education

officials typically measure achievement using classroom performance, graduation

rates and results from standardized tests.”

A study conducted by Wanyama (2013) in Kenya investigated school-based factors

which influence students’ performance at Kenya Certificate of Secondary

Education in Narok North Districts. It was a descriptive survey research.

Findings of the study revealed that the major school-based factor which was

influencing the performance of students were inadequate learning materials.

Similarly, some schools also identified lack of availability of adequate teachers.

A study by Karemera in 2003 found out that students’ performance highly

depends on the facilities available at university such as computer labs, libraries

and transport etc. and it affects their satisfaction level for university too.
S AN LORENZO RUIZ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Similarly, Young in 1999 also suggested that students who avail the library of

university achieve more academically then students who do not.

A study by National College Health Assessment II IN Saskatchewan University

suggests that 25% students reported that their sleep deprivation has affected their

performance negatively and 93% of the students responded that at least one day

in a week, they feel tired and exhausted for whole day because of constant sleep

deprivation or sleeping for less than 6 hours a day.

Relationship of Student’s Learning Behavior and Academic Performance

According to Meerd Komarraju (2011). Character and preferred learning

styles has a significant role that influencing academic achievement. 308

undergraduates (college students) accomplished the five (5) factor inventory and

the inventory of learning processes and reported their grade point average. Two

(2) of the big five (5) traits, conscientiousness and agreeableness is related with

four (4) learning styles (synthesis analysis, methodical study, fact retention and

elaborative processing) whereas neuroticism was negatively related with four (4)

learning styles. Moreover, extraversion and openness were related with

elaborating processing. 14 % in the big five explained the variance in grade point

average (GPA) and 3 % was explained both personality traits and learning styles

has a contribution in academic performance. In addition, the relationship between

openness and GPA was mediated by reflective learning styles (synthesis-analysis

S AN LORENZO RUIZ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

and elaborative processing). These latter results suggest that being intellectually

curious enhances academic performance especially when students scholarly

interest with information processing.
