Department of Ophthalmology

Clinical Clerks’ Guideline 2017-2018

I. SCHEDULE
PRE DUTY: 7am-5pm
DUTY: 7am-7am the following day
FROM: 7am-12nn

***7am sign up at Ophthalmology staffroom, no need to sign out


Regular Holidays/ Red status: Those who are on duty only
University Holidays: everyone will report unless stated otherwise
No Sunday duty

II. DUTIES
PRE DUTY
 OPD- Retina Clinic
 Must be able to do funduscopy and have 2 funduscopy grading
 Describe normal fundus and a pathologic fundus
DUTY
 OPD hours: General Ophthalmology clinic
 Admission/Discharge of CD patients (email to usteyefiles@gmail.com)
 Attend to ERCD calls and CD referrals (with Senior intern)
o History
o VA, eye examination
 For Main patients: daily update while patient is admitted (alternate system applies), endorse
patients properly to next duty
 Referrals- check updates
FROM / Eye institute rotation (includes OR, laser, and diagnostics)
 Sign up at diagnostic area
 Attire: white scrubs, closed shoes (dedicated for OR use), cap, mask
 No chatting, texting, sleeping in the EI / OR

** Follow your patients (especially new) until the management, only patients presented to
residents/consultants will be signed- you need at least 10

II. LECTURES
Daily lectures: 7am to 7:45am - San Damian AVR
Lay forum: 2-3pm every Wednesday in front of Family Medicine in the OPD area
Consultants may pull you out anytime for lectures/rounds

III. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION (must complete within 2 months after rotation)
 1 Mini Revalida
 2 Fundoscopy
 Eye Institute Rotation
 List of In patients, OPD, OR, ER cases
 Exit Exam

Must haves (individual)


1. ophthalmoscope
2. penlight
3. pinhole occluder
4. jaeger chart
5. pocket snellen
6. tissue, cotton buds

Must know topics:


1. Anatomy and physiology of the eye (internal and external), orbit, lacrimal apparatus, visual pathway
2. Common eye diseases: conjunctivitis, hordeolum, chalazion, pterygium, pinguecula, dry eyes
3. Diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, cataract, age related maculae degeneration, open angle
glaucoma, angle closure glaucoma, nasolacrimal duct obstruction
4. Errors of refraction
5. Ophthalmic drugs-, MOA, adverse effects; drugs with ocular toxicity
6. Emergencies- chemical injury, acute angle closure, central retinal artery occlusion
Must know skills: (pls watch youtube videos to guide you, other sources may be used)
1. History Taking

IV. SANCTIONS
Late: beyond 7:10am – 4 hours make up
Unexcused Absence: 1 day absence= 3 days make up
Excused Absence: 8 hours/ day of absence
Out of post: 4 hours make up

For the Group Leader:


Submit on the first day or day before:
1. Conforme of the guidelines signed by all the members of the group
1. typewritten attendance sheet with daily post for the entire rotation (no need to sign out)
2. Individual grading sheet with typewritten name and date of rotation to be compiled in a short sliding
folder
3. Individual JIPS (to be distributed to members) list OPD (Minimum 10 patients), OR (3), ER (2)
patients. list only patients presented to residents or consultants

Submit on the last day


1. Requirements above- attendance sheet, compiled grading sheet, JIPS
2. Compiled lectures (daily and lay forum)- email to usteyefiles@gmail.com
3. Clinical abstracts, discharge papers- email to usteyefiles@gmail.com

***Requirements must be completed within 2 months after the date of rotation.
