Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

The emergence of new technologies changed the way the classroom lives. There is

no doubt that tablets such as the iPad and their multiple applications, along with other

mobile devices and online learning could bring amazing resources into the very foundations

of the educative process (Burke, 2013). A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that the

user can control through simple or multitouch gestures through the use of fingers to enable

real-time interactivity that enables the user to control the objects displayed on the screen.

Since the inception of tablets in the 21st century, education has never been the same

as before, when one could just download a PDF file of a certain book for their class instead

of buying or borrowing the book. One might simply take pictures of the classroom board

instead of taking down notes. The possibilities are endless; however the use of gadgets

during class hours is often frowned upon by most universities, because of conduct issues

inside the classroom and irresponsible use of the students’ gadgets. Tablets may help

students improve their performance inside the classroom, but is it a necessary substitute

from the old-fashioned paper-and-ballpen style being used decades ago?

Background of the Study

Nowadays, people are engaged with the modern, flexible, and reliable technological

devices that has been frequently used as a part of their lifestyle. It is already present at

offices, schools, and homes. This is the manifestation of the digital world through the

presence of touch devices and reliable technological gadgets, which are stepping stones to a

paperless revolution. This research paper will be possible because technological advances

are widely known, indeed feasible. At the end, the researchers will be able to generalize and

at least make conclusions on which will be the best choice of instrument to use in learning.

In lieu of this, there will be gathering of conclusive proofs that the administration will take

immediate measure to bring about changes to the method of giving quality education to

ADDU students.

Statement of the Problem

The study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the benefits of using real books in learning school lessons?

2. What are the benefits of using tablets in learning school lessons?

3. Which between a book and a tablet is preferred to use by ADDU students in learning

a school lesson?

4. What are the challenges faced by the school in providing tablet devices in the

classroom?

Hypotheses

1. A student with the book is a common study tool

2. A student with the tablet shall have an easier and faster way of reading a digital

resource and taking an online exam. It is simple to carry and the weight has nothing

to worry. Whereas, books consumes desk space and can faded overtime, its weight

varies depending on the number of pages it consists. Papers are susceptible to

erasures during a quiz, and can be wasted.

3. ADDU students will realize that tapping is the new “click”, and will come to a point of

reliability. The interaction of the objects in the tablet device would be direct as if

there is a real virtual human connection, which makes learning be more hands-on

and fast.

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the students for they will be informed about better

possibilities to improve their studies. This study will also benefit the teachers, for they will

be able to create new teaching instructions for their students to excel in their classes. Lastly,

this study will benefit the administrators of universities, because they can better conduct

new activities to make the students’ lives easier as well as adapting gadgets into classrooms.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is focused on the students’ preference of using paper or tablet for their

studies and classroom activities. This study is limited to the 2nd year students of ADDU

College. Hence, the data that will be acquired is based from those students who were

delimited for this research.
