Chapter I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In today’s generation, gadget help to fulfill merely every academic

assignment and very fast. Students receive instant access to information sources that

help to complete their tasks. Gadgets are simplified devices that make work easy.

This study will help to know the effect of gadgets in the academic performance

towards grade 11 students in St. Vincent’s High School.

According to (Hedge, A et al. 2019) Electronic gadgets and media have become

an inadvertent part of our lives in today’s era. Growth in mobile phone density has

increased exponentially since the last 5 years. The adolescent population has seen a

very significant increase in the mobile-phone usage, mainly because this gadget

acquires much greater relevance in adolescence than it does in other developmental

stages.

The edited book by Oxford (2009) describes empirical studies art tools, offering

pedagogical ideas, effective strategies and useful suggestion on how these

technologies could be applied to enhance language teaching and learning also.

Educational technology usages in practice teaching can make instruction to be much

more interesting and enjoyable. The changing images and use of special effects

among others can reduce boredom on the part of learners. Further, classroom

interaction can be interactive. Technology can promote students-interaction, student

teacher interaction and teacher-student interaction if pre- instructional planning

incorporates interaction (Wainer, 2009)

Technology has eliminated space and time constraints. Online education and

distance learning have given a new dimension to education and higher learning. Even
if students are geographically far away from each other they can be a part of one

classroom though not physically but virtually, they can. Many educational institutes

offer online educational programs wherein students can internet with their teacher

over the internet access reference material from the university website and earn

degree online (Tritter, 2008).

The importance of technology in school cannot be ignored. In fact with the

onset of computers in education, it has become easier for teachers to impart

knowledge and for students to acquire it. The use of technology has made the process

of teaching and learning enjoyable. (Herzig, 2008). However, it is important to realize

that failure to present multimedia technology in an appropriate form can lead to

negative results. The perception of display on a multimedia application is of

significant importance in terms of transfer learning. Although, too much multimedia

stimulation can interfere with the deeper cognitive processing that critical to learning.

Technology has played a vital role in educational innovations, providing both

teachers and students with more options and flexibility in their teaching and learning

practice. With the internet and computer technology availability, technology becomes

increasingly indispensable in the field of communication education (Keane, 2012). In

today’s school, multimedia software, content-based CD-ROM’S online resources

and many other technologies provide students and teachers with many research

tool, limitless wealth of information ( Eunjoo and Rusell, 2002).

Many people are using gadgets as part of their daily lives. Even in academics,

students use gadgets to expedite the things they need to finish in connection with

their school works and other compliance. This study aims to assess the effect of

gadgets in the academic performance towards grade 11 students, weather are

negative or positive effects.

Hence, the present study was carried out to find out the effect of gadgets in

the academic performance towards grade 11 students in St. Vincent’s High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study will determined the effect of gadgets in the academic

performance towards grade 11 students in St. Vincent’s High School, Bonifacio,

Misamis Occidental,Inc

Specifically, this study will answer the following quires:

1. What are the benefits of gadgets to your academic performance?

2. Do gadgets improve learners academic performance?

3. What is the importance of gadgets in studying?

Significance of the Study

The outcome of this research will be beneficial to the following:

Future Researchers. This study may help future researchers on their own

research. They may widen the scope of their own study or improve this research

study.

School Administrator. This study may be included in school policy. The use

of technology in the classroom.

Students. They will know the benefits of using gadgets in learning and help

them study effectively.

Teachers. This will give awareness to teachers to allow students to use

gadgets more freely and also to guide them in using the gadgets.

Scope and Limitation

Their responses were scaled as to respondents awareness on the

effectiveness of electronic gadgets, and effect on the study, habits of the students and

impact to their academic performance.

This study mainly focused on the effect of gadgets in the academic

performance towards grade 11 students in St. Vincent’s High School, S. Y. 2022-

2023.

The study will be conducted to Grade 11- St. Joseph with the 10-15 respondents.

Definition of Terms

To make the study easier to understand, the following terms are defined

operationally and/ or lexically:

Effectiveness. This refers to the potential and qualification of electronic

gadgets when use to upgrade the academic performance of the students.

Frequency of use. This refers to the number of times or how often the

gadgets are used by the respondents in learning.

Gadgets. This refers to an often small mechanical or electric device with a

practical use but often thought of as a novelty. In this study, gadgets refers to

cellphones, tablets and laptops which are use by the respondents in learning.
Impact. This refers to the effect of gadgets on the respondents in their

learning .

Students. This refers to a person who attend to school, college of university.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This ideas shared by Upadhyay Jesudass and Chitale (2014) The electronic

gadget are very popular among the people and the people are very interested used of

electronic gadgets. So, here based on the craze among the people survey based on the

study is performed and collected data for the impact of the electronic gadgets. This

type of research is quasi experimental control pretest-post test design.

The finding of Upadhyay Jesudass and Chitale (2014) This survey has also

shown that nowadays people are in-directly connected to others by the means of

electronic gadgets and less connected directly or face to face communication. The

study also shown that the marks are adversely affected due to over use of electronic

gadgets. Mostly in youth the craze of electronic gadgets was found, more than 50%

use mobile/tablets.

According to Magwa Simuforosa (2013) studied the impact of modern

technology on the educational attainment of adolescents. The purpose was to examine

relationship between adolescent usage of computers and academic performance.

Within the qualities research the case study design was adopted. Interview and focus

group discussion were primary tools used to gather data. The study found out that

modern technology impact learning both positively and negatively.

Furthermore, (Hedge, A et al. 2019) Electronic gadgets and media have become
an inadvertent part of our lives in today’s era. Growth in mobile phone density has

increased exponentially since the last 5 years. The adolescent population has seen a

very significant increase in the mobile-phone usage, mainly because this gadget

acquires much greater relevance in adolescence than it does in other developmental

stages.

Besides, the importance of technology in school cannot be ignored. In fact

with the onset of computers in education, it has become easier for teachers to impart

knowledge and for students to acquire it. The use of technology has made the process

of teaching and learning enjoyable. (Herzig, 2008). It is important to realize that

failure to present multimedia technology in an appropriate form can lead to negative

results. The perception of display on a multimedia application is of significant

importance in terms of transfer learning. Although, too much multimedia stimulation

can interfere with the deeper cognitive processing that critical to learning.

However, A gadget is a small tool or device with a specific useful purpose and

function. Gadgets tend to be more unusual or cleverly designed than normal

technology. In today’s life, task are maximized with the use of modern gadgets. It is

easier to accomplish daily tasks and people are also able to do work with efficiency.

One cannot even dare to imagine life without gadgets (Tech Crates, 2012).
