Chapter 1

Background of the Study

Modern technology has considerably enhanced people's lives in a variety of


disciplines, including medicine, employment, industry, and, most notably, education. The way
people live has evolved and been impacted by technology. The use of technology has
improved the efficiency and comfort of human life. There is no doubting that gadgets like
phones, laptops, and computers have become an integral part of many people's life
nowadays, especially those of students. But many of us continue to question how these
gadgets impact students' learning and whether there are any positive or negative effects.

Gadget is a technology that is growing rapidly among the people. Gadgets are
widely used among students, especially in using gadgets (Muthi'ah,2021). With the
emergence of gadgets in which there are internet connection facilities, students can take
advantage of the internet connection to access various kinds of information and references
related to various subjects. Therefore, in thisdigital era students can now learn through
various electronic media. Learning resources owned by students do not only come from
books but with internet access facilities found in these media, with this media students are
able to develop and utilize gadgets to obtain and access various kinds of information and
alsoadditional references for students so that students are able to improve their learning
outcomes.

Furthermore, the wider the knowledge of students, the more competencies that will
be achieved by students. This is supported by Arifin's opinion (2011) which states that
technological developments should be utilized as best as possible, so students are not only
limited to handbooks, but they can learn to use the internet network to get free e-books to
support the learning process. Technology is a versatile and valuable tool for teaching and
learning and becoming a way of life. Technological progress has made such a big change in
human life in various fields and has had such a big influence on social life(Sahetapy, 2021) .
Gadgets are a technological tool that is currently growing rapidly and has special functions,
including smartphones and tablets (Fauzi, 2018).

In lieu with this, it can be used as a basis by the school management for implementing
programs and a series of measures that can enhance and improve Grade 12 Students
learning. Moreover, this study can determine and provide additional information in the body
of knowledge on how these influential factors interact with the impact of Gadgets in learning
among Grade 12 students of Southern Baptist College.
Objectives of the Study

General: This study generally aims to determine the impact of Gadgets in learning among
Grade 12 Students of Southern Baptist College.

Specific:

This study significally aims;

To determine the positive impact of gadgets in learning of students.

To determine the negative impact of gadgets in learning in students.

To determine the frequency of use of Gadgets in learning.

Statement of the Problem

This study is conducted to determine the impact of gadgets in learning among Grade 12
students of Southern Baptist College. It specifically aim to response to the following
questions:

1. What is the students’ frequency of use on the following gadgets in learning?

 cellphones;
 computers; and
 tablets.

2. What is the impact of the use of gadgets in learning as perceived by the students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the frequency of use and impact of gadgets?

Scope and Limitations of the study

The study is focused on the impact of gadgets in learning. The respondents of the study were
Grade 12 Students of Southern Baptist College.
