Abstract

Lubricating grease is a fine dispersion of an oil insoluble

thickening agent and a fluid lubricant. Lubrication plays important
part in maintenance of plant and machinery, increasing
the machine productivity and life. In this study lubricating grease
are prepared from waste food oil. The major characteristics of
grease prepare on lab scale are compared with the grease
available in market. Grease is a semi fluid to solid mixture of a
fluid lubricant, a thickener, and additives. The fluid lubricant that
performs the actual lubrication can be petroleum (mineral) oil,
synthetic oil, or vegetable oil. The thickener gives grease its
characteristic consistency and holds the oil in place.Soaps are the
most common emulsifying agent used, and the type of
soap depends on the conditions in which the grease is to be used.
Different soaps provide differing levels of temperature resistance
(relating to both viscosity and volatility), water resistance, and
chemical reactivity. Powdered solids may also be used, such as
clay, which was used to emulsify early greases and is still used in
some inexpensive, low performance greases. The various
properties of grease like acid value, density, iodine value, flash
point, fire point, saponification like etc. are found out in laboratory.
The density of oil is 0.94 gm/cc and viscosity is 1.085085x10-3
