ABSTRACT SUMMARY
For our gait analysis project, our assignment was to calculate data on different
people and their manner of walking. Our group tested a total of four people on their gait,
three girls and one guy. We first started off only calculating the three girls in our group,
but we decided to add a guy to vary out results.
We used an acceleration app on our phones that we taped to each of our lower
backs. This app analyzed every step we took by seeing if we sway our hips when we
walked, turned our feet in our outwards, if we had a bounce in our step, or if we put
most of our weight either on our toes or heels.

INTRODUCTION
For this project we were given a main goal to explore and compare the way
people walk. This is known as there gait. A gait is a person’s manner of walking. To begin
our project we started phase one by learning more and analyzing what exactly made
people’s walk different from one another.
We started part one by answering a variety of questions. These questions asked us
about how we walk, factors that make us walk different, recognizing people’s walk, and
4what parts you could visually see. Then we learned different definitions for the factors
that add into the gait. Last we set a list of everything we would need to do in order to
successfully analyze our walk.
1
We downloaded an app measuring acceleration, made a spreadsheet to input
data, and began to set up our experiment. Once we had gathered all our data and input
our information we were all set to make our graphs and analyze our data. We began our
analysis with this overarching question: How can height affect gait?
METHOD
The data that we obtained was mainly based around graphs that were made to
compare the acceleration of each test subject. We had a pretty good range of heights
going from five foot four to six foot three. We got a total of twelve different graphs and
compared them to see the differences. We also found a difference in step number in the
same amount of time. Uncertainties could be shown through the acceleration. Some of
the numbers could be based on a time frame when we were not walking.
Chloe- Chloe’s Results are below. We found that Chloe is 64.5 inches and take about 16
steps and goes 220 inches in ten seconds.
2
These results show that Chloe takes an average step length of 13.75 inches. We
used this data along with other people’s numbers to predict our model for the
final project.
Adam- Adam’s results are below. We found that adam was 75 inches tall. He also
take about 11 steps in ten seconds while walking 295 inches.
3
From this data we gathered that Adam takes an average of 26 inch strides when
he walks.
Vivian- Below are Vivian’s results. We found in our data that Vivian is 68 inches
tall and takes 13 steps in ten seconds. In thats ten seconds she walked 235 inches.
4
From our data we found that Vivian averages at an 18 inch stride length.
Holly- Holly’s data is below. Holly is also 68 inches tall and she took 14 steps and
walked 230 inches in ten seconds.
From this data we found that holly takes an average stride length of 16.5 inches.
MODEL
For our model we decided to take our four data points and construct a graph that
5
would use height and stride length to find a common equation. Through this graph we
would be able to find a line of best fit and be able to predict height based on stride length
or vice versa. Below is our graph showing our line and our equation above to calculate.
Through this model you should be able to see and predict these two factors in people’s
gaits.
LIMITATIONS
There are certain limitations to our model that factored in at different times. One
of the more prominent limitations for us was the amount of data points we ended up
with. If we had to do the project all over again we would use more of our time to gather
data and create a more reliable way of predicting. Another limitation for us was human
error or accuracy. With any project where you are hand measuring errors in distance of
walk our height may occur. This impacts our data when we go to use our equation to
predict someone's measurements.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, there are always things that could be improved with projects. We
6
did the best with the time given and the instructions given. Overall our project was a
success and we got to an end goal that we had gone out to achieve. Different steps could
have been taken for a better outcome, but we were happy with our final product!
