Course Objectives & This course is intended to introduce students to:
Competences to be  Basic concepts in mechanics of materials;
Acquired  Strength and deformation calculations of loaded members;
 Stability criteria of compression members;
 Design methods of simple machine members.
Course Simple stress and strain in tension and compression
Description/Course members; Deformation; Shear and bending moment
Contents diagrams; Bending stresses in beams, the flexure formula;
Slope and deflection of beams; Shearing stresses in beams,
Course Contents 1. Introduction to Strength of materials. 3hrs.
2. Simple stress in tension and compression: 15 hrs.
equilibrium of deformable bodies. Concept of
force, moment and stress, normal stress,
shear stress, allowable stress; Simple strain
in tension and compression, and deformation
3. Tension and compression tests, stress-Strain 15 hrs.
diagram, stress-Strain behavior of ductile and
brittle materials, Hooke’s Law, strain energy,
Poisson’s ratio, shear stress-Strain diagram.
4. Torsion of structures: torsion of circular 21 hrs.
shafts, torsion formula, angle of twist,
analysis of torque loaded members.
Combined loading of structures: state of
stress of members subjected to combined
loading, axial force, shear force, torsional
moment and bending moment.
5. Bending: shear force and bending moment 18 hrs.

shear force and bending moment diagrams,
bending deformation of beams, flexure
formula. Bending stresses in beams, the
flexure formula
6. Deflection of beams: the elastic curve, slope 12 hrs.
and displacement by integration, method of
superposition.
7. Transverse Shear: shear in straight members, 12 hrs.
the shear formula, shear stresses in beams,
shear flow in built-up members, and shear
flow in thin-walled members.

Attendance Minimum of 80% attendance during lecture hours, and 100%
Requirements attendance during practical work sessions, except for some
unprecedented mishaps.
