Renewable and non-Renewable Resources: The Multidisciplinary Nature of Environmental Studies.

“Environment is the study of structure and function of nature”.

This definition of environment was given by Engine P. Odom in 1971. Environment (renin; vison-circle) literally means “surroundings”, it is
the immediate surrounding space encircling man. It includes abiotic (non-living physical) and biotic (living-plants, animals and man)
components, it is connected with human activity and its impact on natural resources.

Biotic components: These are living objects which includes green and non-green plants, animals, parasites and human beings etc.
They undergo reactions, interactions and interrelated actions among them.

Abiotic components: These are living objects which include non-living, materials like air, water, and soil. Forces of nature like
time, temperature, light.

Biosphere is a global ecosystem; it composed of two components i.e. biotic and abiotic.

1. Abiotic components: They include lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

2. Biotic components: They include plant system and animal system.

Both these components act and react together and their mutual interaction maintains the biospheric system. The upper limit of the
biosphere is determined by moisture, temperature and availability of oxygen in the atmosphere. Most of the living organisms are found up
to the altitude of 6000 meters though some’s bird and insects may found at mountains top at 7000 meters.
