Globalization by Manfred B Steger

Globality - signifies a social condition characterized by the existence of

global economic, political, cultural, and environmental interconnections that
make many of the existing borders irrelevant.

-social condition that is destined to give way to new constellations

-fundamentally indeterminate character

Globalization: set of social processes that are thought to transform our

present social condition into one of globality.

‘globalization is happening’ -
1 leaving behind the condition of modernity
2 moving toward the postmodern globality
3 we have not yet reached it
Denotes transformation of present conditions

Four distinct qualities of globalization

1 Creation of new and multiplication of existing social networks that overcome

economic, political, cultural, and ecological boundaries. (Al Jazeera)

2 Expansion and stretching of social interdependencies (shopping malls,

products, sprouting of organizations)

3 intensification and acceleration

of social exchanges (internet, strategy being shaped)

4 creation of social interconnections (consciousness, identities)

Globalization refers to a multidimensional set of social
processes that create, multiply, stretch, and intensify
worldwide social interdependencies and exchanges while
at the same time fostering in people a growing awareness
of deepening connections between the local and the
distant.

Most challenging question from globalization skeptics: is globalization a

phenomenon of the modern age?
