AIM

Find out the reactions of iron(II) and iron(III), by using freshly prepared solution of ammonium iron(II)
sulphate and iron(III) nitrate respectively.

PROCEDURE

Reaction of Iron

4M of sodium hydroxide was added to a 2cm3 of ammonium iron(II) sulphate solution. Then results were
commented on. Again, 4 M aqueous ammonia was added into 2cm3 ammonium iron(II) sulphate solution.
The first, second and third reactions were repeated this time using Iron(III) nitrate. Excess ammonium
thiocyanate solution was added to 1 cm3 of samples of Iron(II) ammonium sulphate solution and Iron (III)
nitrate solutions. At the end the two reactions were compared. An excess of followed by adding of a drop
of ammonium thiocyanate solution. At the end a comment was given based on the reaction that occurred.
Potassium iodide solution was added in excess to 1cm3 of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III)solution.
Lastly, 1cm3 of zinc sulphate solution was added and comments were given on the reaction that occurred.
Potassium hexacyanoferrate (II) and potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) were prepared. Then to 1 cm3 of
these solutions, 1 cm3 of ammonium Iron (II) sulphate solution was added.

Reaction of copper

4 M of aqueous ammonia was slowly added to 1 cm3 of copper (II) sulphate solution, then the results
were compared with that of reaction one 4 M of sodium hydroxide was slowly added to 1 cm3 of
copper(II) sulphate solution, then the solution was warmed and observations were commented on. For
reaction two, an excess of 50% sodium hydroxide solution was added slowly to 1 cm3 of copper (II)
sulphate solution, then a comment was given on the reaction that occurred. For reaction three,. Reaction
four, an excess of sodium carbonate solution was added to 2 cm3 of copper (II) sulphate solution and
results were compared with that of reaction one. For the fifth reaction, excess potassium iodide was added
to 1 cm3 of copper(II) sulphate solution.then a comment was given concerning the reaction.

MATERIALS

 test tube. water bath. Test tube holders.

 Pipette.

QUESTIONS

1)What reactions of copper are used in its quantitative and qualitative estimation ?

estimation- reaction of copper(II) sulphate with..

Qualitative - coper(II) sulphate with sodium hydroxide solution.

2) Again note any oxidation –reduction reactions, and the oxidation states of copper which occur.

 CuSO4(aq) → Cu(OH)2(s), copper ion lost oxygen atoms to ammonia, but remained copper (II)
ion.
 Reaction of copper(II) sulohate with sodium carbonate
