Chapter 11: Applications and Processing

of Metal Alloys
Often a materials problem is really one of
selecting the material that has the right combination
of characteristics for a specific application.
Types of Metal Alloys Limitations of Ferrous Alloys
 Ferrous - iron is the principal constituent 1. Relatively high densities
 Non-Ferrous - not iron based 2. Relatively low electrical conductivities
3. Generally poor corrosion resistance
Ferrous Alloys
*produced in larger quantities
*3 Advantage Factors:
-abundant of iron-containing compounds
-extremely versatile
-relatively economical production
*Main Disadvantage:
-susceptibility to corrosion
Steels
*iron-carbon alloys

FABRICATION OF METALS
Forming Operations
-Rough stock formed to final shape

Cast Irons
*above 2.14 wt% carbon
