What is Scholarship?

 A scholarship is a financial aid given to deserving students for them to be able to


continue their education.

 An Amount of money that is given by a school, organization, government, etc ., to


a student’s education. (Merriam Webster Dict.)

Types of Scholarships

 Merit-based Scholarship - usually related to academic performance, but these can also
be awarded to those with leadership experience and active involvement in extracurricular
activities.

 Skills-based Scholarship - If you excel in the arts or are outstanding in your chosen
sports.

 Needs-based Scholarship - All scholarships are some form of financial assistance or


benefit for a student. These scholarships typically set caps on the maximum annual or
gross income earned by one’s family as an eligibility requirement to apply for the
scholarship.

 Context-based Scholarship - are those with eligibility requirements that depend on you
and your family’s background. These scholarships usually offer partial tuition discounts
or allowance benefits. A full tuition cover may be granted to some special cases, such as
for military dependents.

4 Top Government Scholarships for College in the Philippines

 DOST-SEI Government Scholarship - offers underprivileged yet excellent students


who belong to the top 5% of their class the opportunity to pursue undergraduate studies.
Degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in state
universities and colleges, CHED identified Centers of Excellence (COE) or Centers of
Development (COD), and institutions with FAAP Level III accreditation are given
priority. After graduation, the scholars are expected to give back by serving the country
for a minimum duration equivalent to the number of years the scholar benefited from the
scholarship.

 OWWA Scholarship - Aside from trainings and scholarships given to aspiring migrant
workers, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration also offers a wide range of
scholarship opportunities for qualified Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) legal
dependents.

Opportunities include:

1. Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) to receive up to Php 60, 000
financial assistance per school year,

2. OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (OFWDSP) which offers up to Php 20, 000
scholarship money to those whose parents’ income does not exceed 400 USD,

3. Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP) for immediate


descendants of migrant workers who want to pursue courses in Science and Technology
fields, and

4. Educational Livelihood Assistance Program (ELAP) which is offered to dependents of


OWWA members at the time of their death.

 CHED Scholarship - has two scholarship programs, namely the State Scholarship
Program (full or partial) and the Private Education Student Financial Assistance
(PESFA). Recipients of the grants are selected based on merit or talent. Full scholars can
receive up to Php 30,000 in aid, while partial scholars can receive up to Php 15, 000.

 DENR Scholarship - Students interested in studying course programs like B.S. Geology,
B.S. Mining Engineering, and B.S. Metallurgical Engineering are in luck as the Mines
and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is
offering a scholarship to talented aspirants set to pursue those degrees. The scholarship
will cover one’s transportation and tuition costs. Recipients are also given a monthly
stipend and an assurance of employment upon graduation.

 Republic act no. 10687 - AN ACT PROVIDING FOR A COMPREHENSIVE AND


UNIFIED STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SYSTEM FOR TERTIARY
EDUCATION (unifast), THEREBY RATIONALIZING ACCESS THERETO,
APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES aka.
“Unifast Act”.
 Republic act no. 9155 – AN ACT IN GOVERNANCE FOR BASIC EDUCATION.

 DepEd Order no. 41 s. 2012 – No Collection Policy in All Public Elementary and
Secondary Schools

Problems in the Scholarships

 Are all the beneficiaries are QUALIFIED?

Conclusion

 Based on our government scholarship or educational assistance have some qualification


or requirements on giving Scholarship aid for Filipino Students.

 In Elementary and Secondary public school in the Philippines, the government mandated
in R.A. 9155 that the Filipinos will be given a quality Basic Education or also known as
the EFA “Education For All” .

 And in Tertiary Education in public State Universities and College, the government also
mandated in providing for a comprehensive and unified student financial assistance
system for tertiary education also known as the UNIFAST.

 Students in public School are no longer to pay on their Tuition fee according to RA.
9155 and RA 10687 that the government will give them a quality education but to those
who will qualified and fulfill the requirements needed.

 Students in all public levels are also not allowed to pay or collect any payments or
miscellaneous fees based on the NO COLLECTIONS and SOLICITATION that
implement in DEPED and CHED Memos and Orders.
