“Trees for Life”
Characters:

 Juan
 Juan’s Father
 Lumberjacks
 Childhood friends
 Juan’s crush

Plot:

There is this child named Juan who lives in a place where there’s only a few people and less houses, and
this is the reason why trees are clearly seen, how beautiful the surroundings are, and how much fun it is to
play every afternoon. He loved this place so much because it was where his childhood started, where he
met his friends, learned how to climb trees to catch birds, and it was the first time he could sit with his crush
under the tree. That’s why Juan will do anything he can to protect this beautiful place that holds thousands
of memories. Until one day, Juan woke up to the loud sound of machines next to their home and when he
looked out the window of his room, he saw workers groping the trees. Juan immediately talked to his dad
about it and cried because his favorite spot was about to build a new house. As the years pass by, the
scenario has always been like this until the worst day came. A landslide happened while they were eating
their lunch but his family managed to stay alive, and due to the lack of trees because of the continuous tree
cutting, many people were injured and houses were also damaged. He then learned and realized that the
less trees a community has, the higher the chance of landslides as there is no absorption in the water and
there’s no roots present to keep the soil intact. Due to what happened, as he grew older, he became more
and more used to the environment, so his job was to take care of it for he knows that this is the right thing
to do. Even though he can't do anything about the construction of houses in their area, he used this as a
motivation and inspiration to plant more trees. Not just in only one place, but in many other places as well.
Juan became a successful environmentalist who advocates the protection for our surroundings. He leads
organizations that help plant and grow trees. He used his profession and childhood experiences to influence
the youth to protect and conserve the quality of the natural environment through changes to environmentally
harmful human activities. While we are young, it is important that we open our minds in preserving our
environment so that we can live peacefully and in case that something happens, we can take action.
Significance:

In developing countries such as the Philippines, landslides are prone. Landslides are commonly defined
as down slope movements of soil, sediment and rock. They take many different forms and are common
everywhere around the world but there are certain areas in which these kinds of events occur more
frequently. According to Kuwano (2009), among the most destructive landslide events in the Philippines
was the 1999 one in Cherry Hills. On August 3rd, after three days of continuous rains and 500mm of
rainfall, a slide occurred in an area where a previously over-steepening slope was undertaken during
construction works. The mudslide killed 59 people, injured 39 others and destroyed 379 houses.
