Section 1 How much and how many?


1. Make questions and answer like the following.
a) How much liquid does the inverted flask contain?
It contains no liquid.
b) How much liquid does the spherical flask contain?
It contains hardly any liquid.
c) How much liquid does the gas-jar contain?
It contains a considerable amount of liquid.
d) How much liquid does the conical flask contain?
It contains a lot of liquid.
2. Write sentences
a) A road construction uses a large amount of bitumen.
b) This crane holds a fairly large amount of steel.
c) This soil has a considerable amount of water.
d) A negligible amount of dirt didn't disturb the mixture.
e) This mixture contains no asphalt.
3. Give the names of elements which have, in one atom:
a) A few electrons (magnesium).
b) A large number of electrons (Tin).
c) A very large number of electrons (uranium).
d) A fairly large number of electrons (Zinc).
e) A very small number of electrons (Lithium).
4. Complete these sentences:
a) How many electrons does an atom of sodium possess?
b) How much oxygen does the atmosphere contain?
c) Our bodies contain a very large amount of water.
d) A large number of whales are found in the Pacific Ocean.
e) There is an enormous number of stars in the universe.

helium, neon, krypton and xenon.

Section 2 Enough and too much


6. These are the average quantities of food consumed by 1 person at the Asia Restaurant:
 Meat 125 grams
 Rice 150 grams
 Bread 100 grams
 Onion 1
 Tomatoes 2
If the restaurant has the following quantities , calculate how much of each kind of food is available:
 Meat 6 kilos
 Rice 9 kilos
 Bread 5 kilos
 Onions 60
 Tomatoes 80
Example: There is enough meat for 48 people
a) There is enough rice for 60 people
b) There is enough bread for 50 people
c) There is enough onions for 60 people
d) There is enough tomatoes for 40 people
7. Say whether the supply of each kind of food is adequate or not when exactly 50 people eat at
the restaurant.
a) There is too much rice
b) There are too many onions
c) There is too little meat
d) There are too few tomatoes
8. One day 55 people come to the restaurant, which has these quantities of food:
a) Meat 7 kilos
b) Rice 8.25 kilos
c) Bread 5 kilos
d) Onions 50

Write down how much (or many) of each kind of food there is (or are) using these words:

9. From your own knowledge, can you say which is the right phrase in each of these sentence
a) A lack of iron causes anemia
b) An excess of carbohydrate causes fatness
c) If your food has not sufficient carbohydrate you will not have enough energy
d) The right quantity of vitamins is necessary for health
e) An inadequate amount of calcium causes bone disease
f) If you have an excessive amount of clothing, you will be too hot

10. Look at this example
a) Why is the tyre flat?
Because the air pressure is insufficient.

c) Why does the light shine brightly?
Because the current is adequate.
d) Why will the boat sink?
Because the cargo is adequate.
e) Why can’t the boat go further?
Because the water is excessive.
f) Why can’t the boat move?
Because the wind is insufficient.
g) Why can the plane leave the ground?
Because the speed is excessive.
Section 3 Too small and big enough
11. Now answer the questions (using the words in italics)
a) Why can’t you put an elephant in your pocket?
Because it’s too big to put in.
b) Why can’t you touch the ceiling?
Because it’s too high to touch.
c) Why you can’t lift a lorry?
Because it’s too heavy to lift.
d) Why does a cork float?
Because it’s light enough to float.
e) Why can’t the lorry go down the street?
Because it’s too wide to go down the street.
f) Why can the car go down the street?
Because it’s narrows enough to go down the street.
g) Why can’t you cut the diamond?
Because it’s too hard to cut.
h) Why can you cut cheese?
Because it’s soft enough to cut.
i) Why can you bend rubber?
Because it’s flexible enough to bend.
j) Why can’t you bend concrete?
Because it’s too rigid to bend.
k) Why can you see bacteria with a microscope?
Because it’s powerful enough to see bacteria.
l) Why can’t you see bacteria with a magnifying glass?
Because it’s too weak to see bacteria.
m) Why can’t you see through paper?
Because it’s opaque enough to see through.
12. Now write ten sentences like these examples with too/enough and for (+noun) or to (+verb),
using these words:
a) The Antarctic is too big to visit in one day.
b) The Sahara Desert is too hot for penguins.
c) Mount Everest is too infertile for people.
d) The Atlantic Ocean is too deep to walk across.
e) The Red Sea is too salty for fresh water fish.
f) Russia is cold enough for penguins.
g) The River Nile is big enough to irrigate a large area of land.
h) The Nile Valley is fertile enough for flowers.
i) The Amazon jungle is fertile enough to grow many plants in.
j) The Northern Europe is too cold for bananas.
k) China is too big to walk across.
13. Look at the map again and answer these questions:
a) Where is there a lack of oxygen?

c) Where is the land over populated?

d) Where is the land under populated?
