CEG 552 – HIGHWAY & TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

TUTORIAL: TRIP DISTRIBUTION & MODAL SPLIT

NAME :______________________________ STUDENT ID: ___________________

GROUP:

1. The Jeffersonville Transportation Study Area has been divided into four large districts (traffic
zones). The following data have been collected for those districts. Provide a trip distribution
calculation using the gravity model for two iterations. Assume Kij = 1. (CO1,PO3)(C4)

Travel Time (min)

2. Fratar method: please do the exercise in the notes. (CO1,PO3)(C4)

3. A calibration study resulted in the following utility equation:

Uk = ak – 0.025X1 – 0.032X2 – 0.015X3 – 0.002X4
Where
X1 = access time (min)
X2 = waiting time (min)
X3 = line-haul time (min)
X4 = out-of-pocket cost (cents)

The trip distribution forecast for a particular interchange was a target-year volume of 5000
person-trips per day. The trip-makers will have a choice between the private automobile (A) and
a local bus system (B). The service attributes of the two competing modes have been estimated
to be:

Attribute X1 X2 X3 X4
Automobile 5 0 20 100
Local bus 10 15 40 50

Assuming that the calibrated mode-specific constants are 0.00 for the automobile mode and
-0.10 for the bus mode, apply the logit model to estimate the market share of the two modes
and the resulting fare-box revenue of the bus system. (CO1,PO3)(C4)
