Six required courses


You may complete these human resources courses in the order of your choice, although
some require a prerequisite:

 Strategic Human Resources Planning MGMT315
 Workplace Training and Development MGMT316
 Performance Management MGMT325
 Labour and Employment Relations MGMT326

Please note that Human Resources Management is a prerequisite for most courses in the
certificate program. The exceptions are:
Organizational Behaviour, which has no prerequisites, and
Workplace Training and Development, which has either Organizational
Behaviour or Human Resources Management as a prerequisite.

Register for individual human resources courses


You may take courses without applying to the certificate program, although some
prerequisites apply. You do not need to apply or submit an application fee.
The course registration deadline is typically two weeks before the course start date, but
classes fill quickly, so register early. Please note that courses you take as a non-certificate
student will not automatically apply to the certificate.

MGMT115
Organizational Behaviour
Study the interaction between individuals and groups in organizations; how to predict and
understand events; the influence of values, attitudes, personality, and emotion on
individual behaviour; and the implications of specific behaviours on the organization.
Topics include communication and motivation, team dynamics, leadership, the role of
politics and power, conflict and negotiation, organizational culture, and change
management.

This course explores the link between organizational and human resources strategies, and
provides the skills and tools you need for effective HR planning. Areas of focus include
standard metrics of HR planning, relevant IT solutions, demand forecasting techniques, job-
and competency-based approaches to aligning future needs with strategic objectives,
management succession plans, success measurement, and the risks and limitations of
outsourcing.

In a unionized environment, conflicts between employees and managers are addressed
through negotiation, discussion, and interpretation of the collective agreement. This course
introduces the fundamentals of the union-management relationship with an emphasis on
the legal and practical framework in BC. Core topics include employment and labour
legislation, the certification process, collective bargaining, interpretation of the collective
agreement, and dispute resolution.
