see WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES in SUSPENSION.
INSPECTION
SHOCK ABSORBER
Compress and extend the shock absorber rod, check that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual operation
sounds. See Fig. 1 . To replace shock absorber, see SHOCK ABSORBER in REMOVAL &
INSTALLATION.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

To locate components, see Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 .

LEAF SPRING
Removal
1. Raise body and support with stands. See Fig. 4 .

2. Lower the axle housing until the leaf spring tension is free. Keep at this position.
3. On 4WD vehicles, disconnect the parking brake cable. See Fig. 5 .

4. On all models, disconnect shock absorber from the spring seat. See Fig. 6 .

5. Remove the four U-bolt mounting nuts. See Fig. 7 .

6. Remove the spring seat, pads and pad retainer.

7. Remove the U-bolts.
8. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, remove the spring bumper.
9. On all models, remove the hanger pin bolt. See Fig. 8 .
10. For 1 ton vehicles and cab and chassis vehicles, remove the hanger pin lock bolt.
11. On all models, disconnect the leaf from the bracket.
12. Remove the shackle pin mounting nuts. See Fig. 8 .

13. Remove the shackle pin and plate, remove the leaf spring.
Installation
1. Place the front end of the leaf spring in the front bracket and install the hanger pin bolt. See Fig. 9 .
2. For 1 ton, cab and chassis vehicles, install and tighten the hanger pin lock bolt to correct torque. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
3. On all other models, finger tighten the hanger pin nut. See Fig. 9 .

4. Place the rear end of the leaf spring in the rear bracket, install the shackle pin. See Fig. 10 .

5. Install plate and finger tighten the nuts.

6. To install the U-bolts, install the pads and pad retainer on the leaf spring. See Fig. 11 .

7. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, install the spring bumper.

8. On all models, install the spring seat, U-bolts, washers and nuts.
9. Tighten the U-bolt mounting nuts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
10. Tighten the U-bolts so that the length of all the bolts under the spring seat are the same. See Fig. 12 .

11. Install shock absorber. See SHOCK ABSORBER in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
12. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, connect parking brake cable.
13. On all models, install the wheel. Lower vehicle. Bounce vehicle up and down to stabilize the suspension.

14. Tighten hanger pin and shackle nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Fig. 14 .

LEAF SPRING (OVERHAUL)
1. Using a chisel and a hammer, pry up the spring clip. See Fig. 15 .
2. Hold the spring near the center bolt in a vise and remove the center bolt. See Fig. 16 .

3. Drill off the head of the rivet and drive it out. See Fig. 17 .

4. Install a new rivet into the holes of the spring leaf and clip. Rivet with a press. See Fig. 17 .
5. Align the leaf holes and secure the leaves with a vise. See Fig. 18 .

6. Install the spring center bolt.

7. Using a hammer, bend the spring clip into the position. See Fig. 19 .

SHOCK ABSORBER
NOTE: To dispose shock absorber gas after removal of shock absorber, fully extend
the rod and drill a small hole in the cylinder to remove the gas inside. See Fig.
20 . The gas is harmless, but be careful of metal debris from drilling.

Removal & Installation
1. Raise and support body on stands. See Fig. 4 .

2. Lower the axle housing until the leaf spring tension is free. Keep at this position.
3. Remove shock absorber. See Fig. 21 and Fig. 22 .
4. To install, connect shock absorber to the frame and spring seat with the bolt. Tighten to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Fig. 21 .

STABILIZER BAR
Removal
1. Disconnect stabilizer bar from link from the body. See Fig. 22 . Remove the retainers and cushions from
the link.
2. Remove the stabilizer bar bracket with cushions from the rear axle housing. Remove the stabilizer bar.
3. Remove retainers and cushions from the stabilizer bar link. Remove the bolt and nut. Remove stabilizer
bar link from stabilizer bar.
Installation
1. Install retainers and cushions to the link. Connect link to stabilizer bar. Tighten the bolt and nut. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
2. Install stabilizer bar to rear axle housing. Install cushion and bracket. Tighten bracket bolts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
3. Position stabilizer bar link to body. Install retainers and cushion to the link. Install a NEW nut. Tighen to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .Lower vehicle.
