Summary
O. Henry´s story tells us the story of Sue and Johnsy, two friends who live together. Also
to living together, they also had in common the love for painting. Sue was from Maine and
Johnsy was from California. In the cold November Johnsy got pneumonia, the doctor said
she only had a chance to recover and was that she wanted it. Johnsy remained in his
room looking at the window that faced the Wall and a vine of old ivy, climbed halfway up
the wall. The cold had ripped off much of the leaves. Sue listened as Johnsy made a
countdown and she explained that there were only five leaves left before the old vine was
empty, at the same time that Johnsy gave up and died. Sue was incredulous and asked
her not to see the window until she finished her painting. She went down to see Behrman,
an old man who always talked about one day doing his masterpiece, she needed him as a
model. Sue told Behrman the relationship Johnsy made of his life with the leaves of the
vine. Behrman mocked such an idea. They both went up to work in the paint and watched
as a storm appeared. The next morning Sue woke up and watched as Johnsy watched the
window uneasily. When they opened it, they both watched with amazement as one last
leaf remained attached to the vine and the wall. Johnsy reflected, believing that if the leaf
could withstand that storm, she could resist and cure the disease. Days passed, Johnsy
recovered and was hoping to continue painting. Sue listened that old Behrman died, they
had found him the same night of the storm, wet and very cold, nobody understood how
that had happened, then they found a ladder, some brushes and a palette with a mixture of
green and yellow, Old Behrman had painted the last leaf that still remained on the wall.

It may not be something related to culture, but living by art for me is something different.
From the story, what interests me most is the end, because is sad but I like it.
Glosary: Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen.
Desire: Deseo
Effort: Esfuerzo
Summary
For nine years each Thanksgiving Day, a tradition had formed between Peter Stuffy, a
wanderer and the Old Gentleman who was 70 years old, was thin, tall and elegant. The
Old Gentleman offered a hearty dinner to Stuffy. This Thanksgiving Day had something
different, because Stuffy didn´t suffer from hunger as in previous years, he had a banquet,
but he was still there waiting for the Old Gentleman only for habit. The Old Gentleman
arrived and they both went to dinner. At the end, Stuffy was more than satisfied and
victorious to end with a great banquet. The Old Gentleman paid the bill. They left the
restaurant and, like every year, Stuffy went to the north and the Old Gentleman to the
south. It was not long when Stuffy began to feel sick and fainted, having had 2 dinners had
made him sick. The ambulance came to pick up Stuffy and in the hospital was also the Old
Gentleman. When the nurse met a doctor, she told him it was possible that the homeless
man was sick from overeating and, instead, the gentleman who looked so elegant and

Summary
On the west side of New York there are homeless people who go from furnished rooms to
furnished rooms. One evening a young man was hanging around the houses that had
furnished rooms. After knocking on some doors, a landlady named Mrs. Purdy looked out
and he asked her if she had a room to rent, to which she replied that since a few week she
had one available. Both went to inside house, the young man, prepared to see the room
but more than that, to ask the landlady questions, such as those he had been asking the
people he had been with for 5 months. He asked about the people who lived there, if many
of them worked in the theater and finally, he asked the most important question. "A young
girl—Eloise Vashner—do you remember her? Has she ever been in this house? She
would be singing in the theater, probably. A girl of middle height, thin, with red-gold hair
and a small dark spot on her face near her left eye.” The woman said no, like everyone
else. And I leave the young man alone to rest. But the young man did not rest, and
suddenly he felt an intense smell, the young man thinking that it was a kind of signal, went
down again with the landlady and asked about the old guests of that room. The landlady
described the guests of the last year and Eloise did not appear among them. The young
man returned to the room disappointed, and while he took his life with the gas from the
stove, for not having found Eloise, the woman he loved, on the ground floor, Mrs. Purdy
told Mrs. McCool that she rented the room, and Mrs. McCool surprised told her that she
was very good at renting rooms, even after the accident, because a little more than a week
ago a young woman with a spot on her face near her left eye had committed suicide with
gas, she was Eloise, the same woman that young man was looking for so much.
