Subject: (MS 138) Structural Design Practice – I
Tutorial Problems: Design of Slabs

1. Design a simply supported slab to cover a room with dimensions 4.0m x 6.0m and
230mm thick brick walls all around. Assume a live load of 3 kN/m 2 and a floor finish
of 1 kN/m2. Use Concrete Grade M20 and Steel Grade Fe415. Assume that slab
corners are free to lift up. Assume mild exposure conditions.

2. Design and detail two way simply supported slab with span 3.50m x 5.00 m resting
on 230mm thick wall on all four sides. Given that floor finish is 1 kN/m 2 and live
load is 3 kN/m2. Use Concrete Grade M20 and Steel Grade Fe415.

3. The floor slab system of a two-storeyed building is shown in Figure-1. The slab is
supported on 230mm thick beams. Given floor finish of 1.50 kN/m 2 and a live load
of 4.00 kN/m2, design and detail multipanel slab system. Use Concrete Grade M20
and Steel Grade Fe415.
