Unit: Unit A

Text: Section 1.1

SLO: KGLO1:3_KGLO2:1

Objective: By the end of the lesson students will be able to name and follow Mr. Loewen’s
citation guidelines.

Materials: Chrome Books, Paper

Assignment: Research on a family of elements

Intro: 5-7 mins.

Welcome class, today we are going to do something a little different. We’re going to conduct
a little research. When scientists’ do much of their research they are borrowing other’s
ideas. To not pass off these ideas as their own they have to do something called citations. In
essence, it is a way of giving credit to those who had the idea. There are many different
styles of citing information. You will learn more of these as you progress in your studies in
post-secondary. For the purpose of my class what I want you to use is simply the URL
followed by the date.

Development: 70-80 min

Let students choose their topic of which family of chemicals. I also want a specific element
highlighted out of the family everyone needs a unique element.

We are NOT presenting on these elements so they don’t need to follow the 8x8 rule. I will
be marking it on ease of reading.

Circulate room working on relationships and answering questions

Close: 5-10 minutes

We’re just starting to begin working on our research skills. We will be working on the same
thing come tomorrow as we have done quite a bit of textbook work recently. This will be
done for homework and it is a summative assignment. Which means it is worth some
marks of your final grade. I am going to try and have your section 1.2 Check your
Understandings done for Friday!
