N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Quinn Pond Date of Activity: 9/24, 10/5, 10/15, 11/19 Faculty name: Linda
Perez

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

One of the professional activities I went to was Stop the Bleed and an active shooter training.

The purpose of this activity was to receive training on how to plan and react in the event of a

violent situation. We were taught how to pack wounds and stop significant bleeds using

tourniquets. With stopping bleeds, we learned how to do it with a given tourniquet and how to

improvise with various resources such as pants, flashlights, and sticks. The other professional

activity I attend were the College of Nursing (CON) Community Advisory Board meetings. The

board is comprised of various CON faculty, researchers, alumni, scholarship donors, student(s),

and others who play roles in local hospitals. As a team, the board discusses events and

accomplishment at CON, as well as finding areas of improvement and how to do so. My role is

to provide any recommendation or opinions from the perspective of a student.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

Both of the activities I attend were held at CON. The Stop the Bleed event lasted for 4 hours on

October 5th, 2019. The CON Advisory Board meetings were 3 meetings that lasted for 1.5 hours

each, which occurred on September 24th, October 15th, and November 19th.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The Stop the Bleed training was important to me because, on top of receiving further education

and skills, I have the information to spread around my community so they can further educate

themselves and better prepare for any life-threatening situations. After going through the

training, I have more information to convince others to participate in the training as well. Being

on the CON Community Advisory Board is very special to me because I was asked to be on the
board after holding and speaking about a drive for feminine products in collaboration with the

Diaper Bank. I was and am still honored to be given this opportunity to stay involved with the

CON and help better its community.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

With the Stop the Bleed training, I become a resource to others who may not have the skills or

knowledge in stopping significant bleeds in the hospital setting or in the community. Being on

the CON Community Advisory Board, I was able to see and apply a lot of the information I have

learned in class about management, leadership, finances, and team building. Applying these

concepts has allowed me to understand them even better. I can carry this experience with me to

better understand and participate in leadership position(s) in a hospital setting, whether that be on

a board or leading a quality improvement intervention.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend both of these opportunities for professional experience. The Stop the Bleed

event is a great opportunity for students wanting to receive extra training and add more to their

resumes. I felt I learned a lot from this opportunity, and it is nice to stay involved in the

community in as many ways as possible. I would also recommend the CON Community

Advisory Board because it is a great way to stay involved with the CON and apply the concepts

learned in class. One of the current third semester students will be taking my place as the student

on the board.
