19. A 20 μF capacitor is charged at a constant current of 5 μA for 10 min. Calculate the final p.d.
across the capacitor and the corresponding charge in coulombs.
20. A four-pole motor is fed at 440 V and takes an armature current of 50 A. The resistance of the
armature circuit is 0.28 Ω. The armature winding is wave-connected with 888 conductors and
the useful flux per pole is 0.023 Wb. Calculate the speed.
21. A shunt motor is running off a 220 V supply taking an armature current of 15 A, the resistance
of the armature circuit being 0.8 Ω. Calculate the value of the generated e.m.f. If the flux were
suddenly reduced by 10 per cent, to what value would the armature current increase
momentarily?
22. Calculate the torque, in N m, developed by a d.c. motor having an armature resistance of 0.25
Ω and running at 750 r/min when taking an armature current of 60 A from a 480 V supply.
23. A 240V DC shunt takes 41A current while running at full load. The resistance of the motor
armature and field winding are 0.1 ohm and 250 ohm respectively. Determine the back emf
generated by the motor.
24. A 200 kVA, 3300 V/230 V, 50 Hz, single-phase trans- former has 80 turns on the secondary
winding. Assum- ing an ideal transformer, calculate: (a) the primary and secondary currents
on full load; (b) the maximum value of the flux; (c) the number of primary turns.
25. A 50 kV A, 6360 V/230 V transformer is tested on open and short-circuit to obtain its
efficiency, the results of the test being as follows. Open circuit: primary voltage, 6360 V;
primary current, 1 A; power input, 2kW. Short-circuit: voltage across primary winding, 180
V; current in secondary winding, 175 A; power input, 2 kW. Find the efficiency of the trans-
former when supplying full load at a power factor of 0.8 lagging and draw a phasor diagram
(neglecting impedance drops) for this condition.
26. A coil of inductance 4 H and resistance 80 Ω is in parallel with a 200 Ω resistor of negligible
inductance across a 200 V d.c. supply. The switch connecting these to the supply is then
opened, the coil and resistor remaining connected together. State, in each case, for an instant
immediately before and for one immediately after the opening of the switch: (a) the current
through the resistor; (b) the current through the coil; (c) the e.m.f. induced in the coil; and (d)
the voltage across the coil.
27. A circuit consists of a 200 Ω non-reactive resistor in parallel with a coil of 4 H inductance and
100 Ω resistance. If this circuit is switched across a 100 V d.c. supply for a period of 0.06 s
and then switched off, calculate the current in the coil 0.012 s after the instant of switching off.
What is the maximum p.d. across the coil?
28. A 130 Ω resistor and a 30 μF capacitor are connected in parallel across a 200 V, 50 Hz supply.
Calculate: (a) the current in each branch; (b) the resultant current; (c) the phase difference
between the resultant current and the applied voltage; (d) the active power; and (e) the power
factor. Sketch the phasor diagram.
29. A p.d. of 100 V at 50 Hz is maintained across a series circuit having the following
characteristics: R = 10 Ω, L = 100/π mH, C = 500/π μF. Draw the phasor diagram and calculate:
(a) the current; (b) the active and reactive components of the current.
30. An impedance of 2 + j6 Ω is connected in series with two impedances of 10 + j4 Ω and 12 −
j8 Ω, which are in parallel. Calculate the magnitude and power factor of the main current when
the combined circuit is supplied at 200 V.
31. A 2400 V/400V single-phase transformer takes a no-load current of 0.5 A and the core loss is
400 W. Determine the values of the magnetising and core loss components of the no-load
current.
32. The design requirements of an 11000 V/400 V, 50 Hz, single-phase, core-type transformer are:
approximate e.m.f./turn, 15 V; maximum flux density, 1.5 T. Find a suitable number of primary
and secondary turns, and the net cross-sectional area of the core.
33. Determine, for the case in which C = 0.01 μF, R = 100000 Ω and V = 1000 V, the voltage to
which the capacitor has been charged when the charging current has decreased to 90 per cent
of its initial value, and the time taken for the current to decrease to 90 per cent of its initial
value.
34. A 20 μF capacitor is found to have an insulation resistance of 50 MΩ, measured between the
terminals. If this capacitor is charged off a d.c. supply of 230 V, find the time required after
disconnection from the supply for the p.d. across the capacitor to fall to 60 V.
35. An induction motor has four poles and is energized from a 50 Hz supply. If the machine runs
on full load at 2 per cent slip, determine the running speed and the frequency of the rotor
currents.
