ASKING FOR PERMISSION AND


REQUEST
(Modal Auxiliary)

Tujuan Instruksional Umum:


 Mahasiswa mengerti menggunakan modal auxiliary yang tepat untuk membuat
permohonan dan permintaan izin dalam bahasa Ingggris.

Tujuan instruksional Khusus:


 Mahasiswa mampu menggunakan bahasa Inggris yang baik dan benar ketika
meminta izin untuk melakukan atau tidak melakukan sesuatu dalam bahasa Inggris
baik secara formal maupun informal.
 Mahasiswa mampu menggunakan bahasa Inggris yang baik dan benar ketika
menyampaikan permintaan/permohonan pada orang lain untuk melakukan sesuatu
untuk dirinya baik secara formal maupun informal.
 Mahasiswa mampu merespon/ memberi tanggapan secara positive dan negative
terhadap permintaan izin atau pemintaan untuk melakukan sesuatu dalam bahasa
Inggris baik secara formal maupun informal.
A. ASKING FOR PERMISSION:

When you ask for permission to use something that belongs to someone else you have to
do your best to be polite. It is desirable to use the word "please."

Asking for Permission:


 Can I go out, please?
 May I open the window, please?
 Please, can I have a look at your photo album?
 Please, may I taste that hot spicy couscous dish?
 Do you mind if I smoke?
 Would you mind if I asked you something?
 Is it okay if I sit here?
 Would it be all right if I borrowed your mobile Phone?

Giving Permission:
 Yes, please do.
 Sure, go ahead.
 Sure.
 No problem.
 Please feel free.

Refusing to give permission:


 No, please don’t.
 I’m sorry, but that’s not possible.
 I'm afraid, but you can't.

Dialogue:
Liza, eight years old, is asking her mother for permission to use the computer...
Liza: Please mum, can I use the computer?
Her mother: No, dear you can't. It's time to go to bed.
Liza: May I read a story before I sleep?
Her mother: Sure! But try to sleep early.
Liza: Thanks a lot mummy.
B. REQUEST

When you ask someone to do something for you, it's important to sound polite. Making a
request is the polite way of asking someone to do something for you.

You can make a request by using:


 Can you ...?
 could you ... (possibly)?
 will you ...?
 would you mind ..... (v-ing)?

Requests Responding
 I wonder if you can/could help me. (formal)
 Can you help me?
 Can you do me favour? (informal)
 I’d like (you) to …
 I need you to …

Sample Sentences:
 Can you show me your photo album, please?
 Will you lend me your book, please?
 Could you possibly show me the way to the post office, please?
 Would you help me with this exercise, please?
 Would you mind lending me your pen, please?

Responding to a Request
 Of course. / Sure. / I hope so.
 That’s no problem. As long as you …
 I’m afraid I can’t help you there.
 That might be difficult.
 OK. I’ll see what I can do.
Introductory to a Request
 Excuse me.
 Sorry to bother/disturb you.
 Do you have a minute?
 Can you spare a few minutes?
 Could you do me a favor?
 Could I ask you a favor?
 Can I ask you to . . . ?
 I need some help (if you have time).
