ZCE 431: EXERCISE on TOPIC 3

1. A narrow beam containing 2000 monoenergetic photons is reduced to 1000 photons

by a slab of copper 10-2 m thick. What is the total linear attenuation coefficient of
the copper slab for these photons?

2. What are the total mass (µm), atomic (µa), and electronic (µe) attenuation
coefficients of the copper slab described in Example 1? Copper has a density
of 8.9 × 103 kg/m3, a gram-atomic mass of 63.6, and an atomic number of 29.

3. To the 0.01 m copper slab, 0.02 m of copper is added. How many photons
remain in the beam emerging from the slab where the initial number of photon is 2000?

4. Two volumes of water and air is positioned in the same point in a radiation field (1 MeV
photons). If the dose to the air is 1 Gy what is the dose to water?

Given: (µen/ρ)water = 0.0309, (µen/ρ)air = 0.0278

5. For a 10 MeV photon incident on water, find energy transfer, energy absorbed, g fraction,
energy radiated away.

Given: (µ/ρ)water = 0.0222 cm2/g, (µen/ρ)water = 0.0157 cm2/g, (µtr/ρ)water = 0.0162 cm2/g

6. A 6 MeV photon (fluence = 1 x 1011 cm-2) interacts with water (µtr/ρ)water = 0.0162 cm2/g.
What is the average kerma in water?
7. A water tank is exposed to 1.25 MeV gamma-radiation. At a certain point, the fluence rate
is 3.5 x 109 cm-2s-1. What is the value of Kcol at this point after one hour?

Given : , (µen/ρ)water = 29.65 cm2kg-1

8. A 6 MeV photon interacts by Compton scattering in a given volume. The secondary electron
spend half its kinetic energy in electronic collisions, one-fourth in radiation losses and
remaining energy leaves the volume as delta ray. The scattered photon carries 4 MeV when it
escapes the volume. Draw the diagram of energy distribution in a volume by photon, scattered
photon, electron and radiative loss. What are the values of energy transfer, net energy transfer,
and energy imparted?

9. A water tank is exposed to 1.25 MeV gamma-radiation. At a certain point, the fluence is
2.1x 1011 cm-2. What is the absorbed dose at this point?

Given:

D = Kcol under CPE condition

(µen/ρ)water = 29.65 cm2kg-1
