Introduction

In this module you will learn to talk about the weather.

You will also learn to buy a ticket and vocabulary to help you on a phone
conversation.

Vocabulary

Seasons To sleet It’s misty.

Autumn To shower It’s lightning.

Winter To snow It’s humid.

Summer To thunder It’s cloudy.

Spring To frost It’s pouring.

Weather Verbs To blow It’s sunny.

To rain To cloud over It’s raining.

Grammar

Some verbs are irregular. Their past forms do not end in -ed.

So how do I know which verbs are regular and which are irregular?

You have to learn them!

Learn them from the list? Oh no!

It's not so bad. There aren't really so many verbs to learn and remember that
English is much easier than many languages. The past forms don't change.

I took a taxi to the airport. (take → took)


That was when we spoke. (speak → spoke)
One person gave me his last bar of chocolate. (give → gave)

The verb "be" is often used in the past tense with
the word "there"

Singular Plural

There was... There were...

To make the negative, add "not" to "was" or "were"

Singular Plural

There was not... There were not...

There wasn't... There weren't...

To make a question, put "was" or "were" before "there"

Singular Plural

Was there... ? Were there... ?

Examples

Was there a forest? There was a forest.

Were there any clouds? There were no clouds.

Conversation about buying a ticket

Conversation 1

A: I would like to book a flight.

B: I can help you with that. Where are you traveling to?

A: I am traveling to Singapore.

B: What date will you be traveling?

A: I want to fly on June 14th.

B: Do you want to fly out of Los Angeles International or Burbank Airport?

A: I would like to fly out of Los Angeles International Airport.

B: Would you prefer a morning or an afternoon flight?

A: I would rather fly in the morning.

B: Well, I have you booked on a flight that will fit your schedule. The tickets
will arrive by mail in a few days.

Conversation 2

A: I want to buy a plane ticket.

B: I can help you make your reservation. What is your destination?

A: My final destination is Sydney, Australia.

B: What is your travel date?

A: I am making a reservation for December 12th.

B: Would you prefer to leave from Los Angeles International or Burbank


Airport?

A: I want to fly out of Burbank Airport.

B: Would you rather fly in the morning or later in the day?

A: I need an afternoon flight.

B: I have you booked on a flight in the afternoon. Your tickets will arrive in
the mail within 3 days.

A: I need to make a plane reservation.

B: We can book your trip right now. What city are you flying to?

A: I need to fly to New York City.

B: What date would you like me to book this plane ticket for?

A: I need a flight on July 4th.

B: You can fly out of Los Angeles International or Burbank Airport. Which do
you prefer?

A: I will fly out of whatever airport has the cheapest price.

B: If you have a choice, what time of day would you prefer to fly?

A: I would like to be booked on the least expensive flight.

B: I was able to find an inexpensive flight for you. We are sending you your
tickets in the mail.
