Answer all the following questions, show all necessary working

1. Sketch the graph of the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥(𝑥 + 4) − 5

Hence, solve the inequality, 𝑥(𝑥 + 4) > 5

2. The function 𝑓 is defined by 𝑓: 𝑥 → 1 − 6𝑥 − 3𝑥 2 , 𝑥 ∈ ℝ

i. Express in the form 𝑢(𝑥 − 𝑣)2 + 𝑤, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑢, 𝑣, 𝑤 ∈ ℝ.

ii. By sketching the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥), or otherwise, state the turning point P of the

graph and indicate whether P is a maximum or a minimum.

3. The function, 𝑓, is defined by 𝑓: 𝑥 → 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 3, 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, 𝑥 ≥ 1.

i. Sketch the graph of 𝑓

4. Express 𝑓(𝑥) = 12𝑥 − 2𝑥 2 in the form 𝐴 + 𝐵(𝑥 + 𝑝)2 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐴, 𝐵 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝 are real

numbers. Hence, sketch the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = 12𝑥 − 2𝑥 2 , showing clearly its main

features.
