Objectives:
At the end of this session the students should be able to:
distinguish between data and information;
- Data is raw unprocessed facts; information as processed data.
Sources of data and information (people, places and things).
Document types: turnaround document, human-readable and machine-readable
Forms; hard copy, and soft copy.
Information is data, whether in the form of words numbers, graphics, or sound that has been organize
and presented so that the underlining patterns become clear. When a relationship is established
between data items, its results in information being produced.
Information process sing is the acquisition, recording, organization retrieval and dissemination of
information. It is the application of structure to data in an attempt to communicate meaningfully.
1. Captured data from a barcode on a product label and retrieve the discounting selling price.
2. Process a series of images in real time using a facial recognition software.
3. Search a database of fingerprints for a particular fingerprint
4. Update data in a file
5. Display a particular image on screen
6. Sort vast quantity of data In a particular order
Information processing systems can take many forms depending on the environment in which they are
deployed. There are many examples of information processing systems in everyday use in our homes,
schools, churches and communities.
1. In our homes, web based information retrieval and management system are used on a daily
basis. Face book, twitter, flickr and youtube are all examples. Each of these manages millions of
items of data and allows its users to retrieve information when required.
2. In our schools, information processing systems are use to manage records of staff(administrative,
academic, and ancillary) and students.
3. In our churches computer based record of events such as baptism weddings burials are kept
Document types: turnaround document, human-readable and machine-readable
Turnaround document is human readable and machine readable. A machine creates its and a human
adds more data or uses it for input for something else. The document is then read by a computer, which
updates or processes records with the new data. This means that a machine creates it as output which
you modify and the machine uses document as input again
Examples are utility bills such as water bills with perforated section that is completed by the customer
and then use as input
Multiple choice answer sheets, utility bills and card for collecting meter reading
Include all documents that has to be read by, a barcode scanner, magnetic ink character recondition and
optical mark reader.
Softcopy is temporary form of output, as produced by a visual display unit( monitor) or audio output
device (speaker)
