Over 200 million eggs have recently been recalled due to the fear of

salmonella contamination

On April 13, Rose Acre Farm in Seymour, Indiana, recalled 207 million eggs that it believed

was contaminated with Salmonella in nine different states. These states include New Jersey,

North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado, and

New York. Distribution of the product took place here in North Carolina’s Hyde County. Rose

Acre Farm produces approximately 2.3 million eggs per day, and is the second largest egg

producer in the United States. CNN has reported that so far, 23 people have fallen ill due to the

contaminated product, resulting in 6 being hospitalized, according to the US Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention. states linked to distribution recalls are The Federal Food and Drug

Administration took a visit for an observation of the farm a few days prior, and discovered it to

be in somewhat unsanitary. They recorded live rodents in the production line and in the feed.

Also recorded, were workers being seen scratching their hair, face, and buttocks without washing

their hands or changing their gloves before continuing the handling of the produce. According to

CNN, equipment was also “visibly dirty” with food residue covering them. The Food and Drug

Administration also learned of multiple salmonella outbreaks that occurred last month, in which
they were also linked to the Rose Acre Farm in Hyde County, North Carolina. North Carolina

A&T State University professor, Arthea Perry, received a bit of sickness behind the recall as

well.

“I may have eaten two or three eggs. I was wondering why I was hurting Monday, Tuesday,

and Wednesday. My friend asked me had I heard about the egg recall and I had completely

forgotten.” Says Perry.

The egg brands that have been recalled are Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Nelms, Great

Value, Publix, Sunups, Food Lion, Sunshine Farms, Glen View, and Crystal Farms.

As of right now, Rose Acre Farm has paused production until further notice.

“I think that there needs to be tighter regulations on the food industry that mass produces

food. Most of these places have poor quality when it comes to clean environments. And

unfortunately, these eggs are sold at places that most lower class people shop. They cannot

afford free range eggs or egg alternatives because of the price or those supermarkets are not in

their communities. It affects the disenfranchised communities the most.” Says North Carolina

A&T State University senior, Stacey Brothers.

The Rose Acre Farm is currently undergoing preparations for a follow up inspection

conducted by the Food and Drug Administration.

Fever, Abdominal cramps, and diarrhea are the symptoms of salmonella poisoning.

Symptoms may last from four to seven days, and in some cases, may turn fatal. Approximately

1.2 million cases of salmonella illnesses are recorded every year, and 450 deaths are a result of

the disease. Officials are urging those who are in possession of eggs with the plant number

P-1065 ranging from dates 011 to 102 to either throw them away, or return them to the store of
purchase for credit or a refund.
