Practice and Brief Description
Name: Read Naturally

Description: This research practice is a supplemental reading program that aims to improve
reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension for students who are in elementary and middle
school. Read Naturally can be implemented in the general classroom, resource room, media,
room, extended day program, and multiple level classrooms. The three main strategies include
repeated reading of text for oral fluency, teacher modeling, and systematic monitoring of
student progress by teachers and students themselves.

How does it work?

The specific steps a teacher should take to implement this practice is to first access a student’s oral reading through a curriculum-based
measure. Based on the test results, students will then be provided with a reading level. There are different levels that students can be placed
in, with each level containing twenty-four non-fiction, high interest stories for student to choose. The low reading level stories also contain
high frequency words. Once students are logged into Read Naturally, they will first select a story. Students will then be provided with key
words where they will then write a prediction. Teachers may decide to engage in a cold reading where they will time their students reading
the story for one minute or allow the student to complete this step alone. Students will then complete a read along with a recording of the
story. They will then complete some practice followed by a quiz. Students will then retell/summarize the story to improve comprehension
and then read the story to the teacher to show that they can read with expression with minimal errors.
