GRADE: 4th Grade

OBJECTIVE(S): SWBAT play instruments alone and with others. SWBAT develop and use models of
Earth’s solar system to demonstrate the location and order of the planets as they orbit the Sun.
STANDARDS:
 4.E.3A.1 Develop and use models of Earth’s solar system to exemplify the location and order
of the planets as they orbit the Sun and the main composition (rock or gas) of the planets.
 Benchmark GM.P.NL.4 I can make sounds with classroom instruments and other sound
sources.
 Benchmark GM.P.NM.4 I can imitate short rhythmic patterns.
LEARNING TARGET(S): I can use instruments to demonstrate the rhythm and use movements to a
steady beat. I can identify the planets and their order.
MATERIALS (What tools, resources, supplies will you need to teach your lesson):
 Words and music to the song The Planet Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLhqWE3kxgQ
 Copy paper
 Slips of paper with planets and sun names
 Writing/coloring utensils
 Clear floor space for movement to produce a steady beat and follow rhythm while singing and
for a whole group activity.

INSTRUCTION:

WARM UP (Introduction, opening activity, activation strategies…):

Vocal warmups. Question to students: Who can tell me what is in our solar system? (Lead students
towards the answer of the planets). Today we will learn a song about the planets and their order in
the solar system.

MIDDLE (steps of your lesson):

1. Teacher will pass out slips of paper with each planets name on it to each individual student
2. Teacher will sing/model The Planet Song
3. Students and teacher will sing the choral part together and students will sing their individual
planets that were assigned to them.
4. Students will then use the maracas and tambourines to play to the beat and rhythm of the song.
5. Practice having students list the planets in order.
6. Students will be given copy paper and coloring materials. They will take their piece of paper and
draw the planet that they have been assigned to. Students will then color in their planet and write the
name of their planet on the same piece of paper.
7. Students will then get in the correct order in an orbital circle, which represent how the planets
orbit the sun. The sun will then be assigned and placed in the middle of the circle.
8. The students will then observe their place in the circle and be able to identify how the planets orbit
the sun in the correct order.

WRAP UP/REVIEW/CLOSURE (How will you close your lesson? Include any review questions you
might use):
Students, in order to remember the planets for future reference, you can use the acronym: My Very
Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos.

This will help you remember each of the planets in their correct order. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Does anyone have any final questions about what we learned today? Does anyone have any
comments about today’s lesson?

REFLECTION: (To be completed after you teach. What would you keep, change, or modify in your
lesson if you taught it again? This part is for you. It does not need to be submitted to your instructor).
The Planet Song Lyrics
"We are the planets big and round

Watch us happily fly around

We are the planets big and round

Watch us happily fly around

I'm closest to the sun

I'm Mercury Mercury

I'm the brightest in the sky

I'm Venus Venus

And I'm your planet

I'm Earth Earth

I'm a Red planet

I'm Mars Mars

We are the planets big and round

Watch us happily fly around

We are the planets big and round

Watch us happily fly around

I'm the largest planet

I'm Jupiter Jupiter

I'm the planet with the Rings

I'm Saturn Saturn

I have 27 moons!

I'm Uranus Uranus

I am made of Gas

I'm Neptune Neptune

We are the planets big and round

Watch us happily fly around

We are the planets big and round

Watch us happily fly around."
