2.3. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Follow these instructions to ensure that either the trainer or the student is safe when doing the
experiments/observation.

1. Your vehicle contains a sealed Li-ion battery. If the Li-ion battery is disposed of
improperly, there is a risk of severe burns and electric shock that may result in serious
injury and there is also a risk of environmental damage.
2. The EV (Electric Vehicle) system uses high voltage up to approximately DC 400 volt.
The system can be hot during and after starting and when the vehicle is shut Off. Be
careful of both the high voltage and high temperature.
3. Never disassemble, remove or replace high-voltage part and cables as well as their
connectors because they can cause severe burns or electric shock that may result in
serious injury. High-voltage cables are colored orange.
4. The EV (Electric Vehicle) system uses high voltage current. Failure to follow the
proper handling instructions may cause serious injury. Be sure to read the “Charge”
section and follow the procedures and guidelines.

Precautions On Charging
5. If you use any medical electric devices, such as an implantable cardiac pacemaker or
an implantable cardiovascular defibrillator, check with device manufacturer
concerning the effect that charging may have on implanted devices before starting the
charge operation. Charging may affect the operation.
6. If you have an implantable cardiac pacemaker or an implantable cardiovascular
defibrillator, while the Li-ion battery is charging: Do nor stay inside the vehicle, Do
not go inside the vehicle, for example to remove or place an item in the passenger
compartment, Do not open the rear hatch, for example to remove or place an item in
the cargo area. Charging may affect the operation of electric medical device and result
in serious injury.
7. Make sure there is no water or foreign material in the charge port, charge connector or
electric port, charge connector or electric part, and that the are not damaged or
affected by rust and corrosion. If any these conditions are noticeable, do not charge
the Li-ion battery. This may result in a short circuit or electric shock and could cause a
fire which may result in serious injury.
8. To avoid serious personal injury when Li-ion battery is charging, be aware of the
following precaution: Do not touch the metal contacts of the charge port, charge
connector or electric plug, Do not touch the vehicle and charger when there is
lightning. A lightning strike may back feed in to the charger causing damage and
possible personal injury.
9. Make sure the charge connector is removed from the charge port before starting your
vehicle. If the charge connector is only partially engaged and the connector latch is
unlocked, it is possible to place the EV (Electric Vehicle) in the READY to drive
position.
10. Do not plug in or unplug the plug with your wet hands and do not stand in the water,
liquid or snow. This may cause electric shock which may result in serious injury or
death.

temperature for extended periods, Do not store a vehicle in temperatures below -13ºF
(-25ºC) for over seven days, Do not leave your vehicle for over 14 days where the Li-
ion battery available charge gauge reaches a zero or near zero (stage of charge).
2. The Li-ion battery warmer does not operated if the available Li-ion battery charge is
less than approximately 30% and the charger is not connected to the vehicle. To help
prevent the Li-ion battery from freezing, do not leave the vehicle in an environment it
temperatures may go below -1ºF(-17ºC) unless the vehicle is connected to a charger.
3. To prevent damage to the charging equipment: Do not close the charge port lid without
closing the cap, Do not subject the charging equipment to impact, Do not pull or twist
charge cable, Do not drag the charge cable.
4. Make sure the cap is closed on the charge port when charging is finished. If the charge
port lid is closed when the cap is open, water or foreign materials may enter the charge
port.
5. Do not charge when a vehicle body cover is in use. This may cause damage to the
charger connector.
6. Do not attempt to perform a jump start on the 12-volt battery at the same time that the
LI-ion batter is being charged. Doing so may damage the vehicle or charging
equipment and could cause an injury.
7. Do not use any charging equipment that is not compatible with the Nissan LEAF.
Doing so could prevent LI-ion battery from charging properly or could result in
damage to the vehicle Li-ion battery.
8. Only charge using a standard 110 – 120volt, 15A dedicated electric outlet (for example
do not use an electric generator). Failure to do so may cause charging to fail and could
cause damage to the Li-ion battery charging equipment due to power surges.
9. It is recommended to use genuine NISSAN Charging equipment to charge the vehicle.

Intelligent Key
10. Do not allow the intelligent Key, which contains electric components, to come into
contact with water or salt water. This could effect functioning of the system.
