LESSON PLAN Date: Dec.

2nd/2019

Grade: 4/5 Lesson Title: Basketball (Skill Progression, Sharks&M, Knockout) Lesson Duration (mins): 45 mins

Overview of lesson:

Through the lesson students will perform basic skills in receiving and sending an object with control as they pass,
dribble and shoot throughout the activity of Sharks and Minnows and the game of Knockout. Each activity aims to
use game relevant skills which can be practiced and developed through the use of shooting, maintaining an object
with control and using rebounding skills. Students will use sharks and minnows to develop performing
manipulative skills as they retain an object with control along with using spatial awareness. Knockout is chosen to
develop students shooting consistency while introducing the backboard more consistently and focus on sending an
object with control. Games altogether allow students the opportunity to demonstrate effort and the relationship
between skill building and game relevant tactics and rules.

(A)ctivity Basic Skills - Manipulative

A5-5
- Students will acquire skills through a variety - Select, perform and refine more challenging ways to
of developmentally appropriate movement receive, retain and send an object with control
activities (Games)
A5-6
- Consistently and confidently perform manipulative skills by
using elements of the body and space awareness, effort
and relationship

Learning Objectives

Students will perform skills of dribbling, and ball control through progressively challenging ways

Students will build consistency when performing manipulative skills as students use elements of the body in
relation to others, when dribbling or maintaining control of an object

Students will develop skills within sending an object with control, this developing confidence with spatial
awareness

**All outcomes are achieved through active and safe participation in physical education**

Lesson Procedures
Introduction (5 min):

- Discuss outline of Activities (Warm up, Skill Progression, Sharks and Minnows, Knockout)

- Explanation of Skill Progression

o This will focus on using the corners of the backboard square and shooting to bounce it in
 Focus is on banking the shot and not simply shooting
 Develop shooting awareness with backboard
 Use of proper form and shooting dynamic

- Explanation of Sharks and Minnows

o Select one or two players to be “sharks”, and the rest of the class will line up with basketballs on the baseline and be
minnows
o The sharks will start at the half court line facing the baseline
 For minnows the object of the game is to dribble across from baseline to baseline without their ball being
knocked lose or losing control
 Both sharks and minnows will stay within the basketball court
 The last 2 minnows will become sharks for the next game
 Sharks will not have balls, if a minnow is eliminated they will lose their ball

- Explain rules of Knockout

o This game will be similar to Bump, but rules will be different
o Students will form lines behind various basketball nets
 Students will have balls with the first 2 shooters lined up
 If the first shooter makes the shot they will be safe but if they miss the person behind can eliminate them
 The main difference to bump is that if you miss, the ball must be played where it bounced
 Forced to shoot from that spot, should allow students to focus on good shots and clean rebounding
o If eliminated students will wait till next round, there will be no double knockout or ‘revenge swaps’

Body (35 mins):

Warm Up- (5 mins) Student Lead Identify Teaching Strategies:
- Using Direct Instruction, indicate which student is the leader
and instruct to begin warm up activity - Use of direct instruction for explanation
o Student Leader will lead 3 laps around the outside and of rules and expectations
stretches
- Use of student lead activity lends to
Skill building- (5 mins) indirect instruction which focuses around
- Shooting corners Practice/Instruction the management of student selected
o Focus on developing consistent shot game
o Like bouncing an egg, not too hard
 Soft touch Assessments

Activity- (10 mins) Formative:

- Sharks and Minnows
o 2 sharks, rest are minnows - Formative Assessment will focus on effort
o The sharks will start at the half court line facing the and consistent approach to use of spatial
baseline awareness and performing
 For minnows the object of the game is to dribble retaining/sending skills
across from baseline to baseline without their ball o Use of observation as basis of
being knocked lose or losing control
formative assessment
o Parameters are the basketball court

2
 The last 2 minnows will become sharks for the next  Aided with use of a
game checklist (attached
o Sharks will not have balls, if a minnow is eliminated they below)
will lose their ball o Checklist will be created
throughout the continuation of
Game- (15 mins) the unit or weekly progressions
- Knockout
o Students will form lines behind various basketball nets - Forms of peer sharing is offered during
 Students will have balls with the first 2 shooters transitions of activities
lined up o Can be formed through the basis
 The ball must be played where it bounced
of skill development, rules and
o If eliminated students will wait till next round, there will be
tactics development
no double knockout or ‘revenge swaps’

Differentiation

- Use of modelling of skill (Shooting)

o Aid students who find direct instruction unclear and/or need benefit of visual aid
o If potential for using a whiteboard is present, allow for drawing of how the dribbling activity is to be
completed

Consolidating and Closure- (5 mins)

- Students will focus on relevant skills such as:

o Not dribbling with ball outside of body control (as running throwing too far ahead)
o Focus is on developing skills we use in a game
o Shooting consistently and by using backboard as an aid

- What helped them be successful ?

o Shooting consistently
o Use of quick rebounding
o Defensively targeting the ball, not the hands

- Allow for equipment to be put away or for students to change*
