Direct oxygen insertion to C-H bond by mesopore-confined copper
complexes
Chung-Yuan Mou
Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University

The exquisite selectivity and excellent activity of oxidative transformation performed by copper
enzymes have been sources of inspiration for chemists trying to emulate their catalytic functions.
Synthesis of model compounds to mimic the active site of copper enzyme has been an active area of
research. However, in these model compounds in homogeneous solution the necessary function of
the protein backbone is usually not considered. Protein backbone plays important roles in
site-isolation, nanoconfinement, and substrate duct to facilitate a specific catalytic action. A smart
combination of enzyme mimetic complex and a mesoporous media, for mimicking protein skeleton,
to optimize enzymatic functions would be most desirable.
A di-copper complex was used in direct oxidation of toluene to benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde by
oxygen at room temperature. The tripodal tridentate copper(II) complex, CuImph (Imph =
bis(4-imidazolyl methyl)benzylamine), is synthesized to mimic the active site of copper enzymes
that mediate the oxidation of aliphatic C–H bonds. Various functionalized Mesoporous silica
nanoparticles were used as scaffold to encapsulate the complex. No additional sacrificial reductant is
needed. This heterogeneous formulation of the dicopper cluster is capable of converting toluene into
benzaldehyde with high catalytic efficiency and excellent product yields without over-oxidation at
room temperature. The heterogeneous catalyst is also robust and re-usable. Detailed mechanistic
study was performed to understand the catalytic steps.
A tri-coper catalyst is assembled by immobilizing into mesoporous silica nanoparticles the tricopper
complex [CuICuICuI(7-N-Etppz)]1+, where 7-N-Etppz stands for the organic ligand
3,30-(1,4-diazepane-1,4-diyl)bis[1-(4-ethylpiperazine-1-yl)propan-2-ol] which is a biomimic
complex of the enzyme monooxygenase. The tricopper cluster complex has been shown to mediate
efficient methane oxidation without over-oxidation in homogeneous solution when the catalytic
turnover is driven by hydrogen peroxide in acetonitrile. The turnover mechanism of the catalyst is
similar between the two complexes in which molecular oxygen was directly involved in the
oxidation.

The Design of Catalytic Processes for the Conversion of Biomass into Fuels and Chemicals
George W Huber
a
Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison,

In this presentation we will discuss three different approaches for the catalytic conversion of biomass
including 1: catalytic conversion of biomass into α,ω-diols, 2: ethanol conversion into distillate fuels,
and 3: supercritical methanol dehydration and hydrodeoxygenation of biomass into mono-alcohols.
We will describe a multi-step catalytic approach for conversion of cellulose into 1,6-hexanediol and
hemicellulose into 1,5 pentanediol. Cellulose is first converted into levoglucosenone (LGO) in the
condensed phase with dilute acid using a polar, aprotic solvent. The LGO is then hydrogenated into
dihydrolevoglucosenone, levoglucosanol, tetrahydrofuran-dimethanol (THFDM). The THFDM
then undergoes selective C-O-C hydrogenolysis to produce 1,6-hexanediol using a bifunctional
(Pt-WOx/TiO2) catalyst with > 90% selectivity to 1,6 hexanediol. Tetrol and 1,2,6 hexanetriol can
also be selectively produced with this system. The hemicellulose is converted into furfural which
then undergoes a four step process to produce 1,5 pentanediol.
Ethanol can be converted with high yields into distillate-range ethers and olefins by combining
Guerbet coupling and intermolecular dehydration. The ethers can be used as cetane-improvers in
diesel fuel, while the olefins can be hydrogenated and blended with gasoline or oligomerized and
hydrogenated to jet-range paraffins. The first stage was executed using calcium hydroxyapatite to
produce higher linear and branched alcohols at above 80% selectivity at up to 40% conversion.
Increasing conversion decreases selectivity, producing predominantly mono-ene and diene
byproducts. Etherification was performed using the acidic resin Amberlyst™ 70 at around 65%
conversion. Linear alcohols were converted at above 90% selectivity while branched alcohols were
far more selective to olefins (65–75%). An overall process is presented for the conversion of ethanol
to diesel-range ethers and olefins with yields of approximately 80%.
Supercritical methanol depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation (SCM-DHDO) converts solid
biomass into C2-C6 alcohols in high yields in a single catalytic step. The process uses a CuMgAlOx
catalyst derived from a hydrotalcite precursor. SCM-DHDO depolymerizes hemicellulose, cellulose,
and lignin in supercritical methanol then converts the lignin into cyclohexanols and the
hemicellulose and cellulose into mono-alcohols. Hydrogen is produced in-situ via methanol
reforming over Cu sites. In this presentation, we will discuss the reaction pathway from cellulose and
lignin to single alcohols. We will show that methanol accounts for ~30% of the carbon of all liquid
products from cellulose. Conversion of C3 oxygenates such as dihydroxyacetone produces the same
products as cellulose indicating the reaction pathway for cellulose conversion passes through
retro-aldol condensation. Our results elucidate the reaction pathway of a new approach to produce
fuels from whole biomass in a single reaction step. A better understanding of the chemistry occurring
during the process will allow more targeted catalyst design and better process design.

Over the paast decade, the develop pment in thee valorization of biomass technoloogies keepss increasingg
because thee biomass uttilization fo
or the manuffacturing fin
ne chemical and fuels hhas diverse advantagess
over fossil feedstock. The review w focuses on the utiliization of metal-organ
m nic framework-derivedd
(MOF-derivved) materiials as effecctive solid catalysts foor the valorrization of bbiomass innto platform
m
chemicals. MOFs com mpose of abu undant orgaanic ligandss and metal cluster, andd additional functionall
groups couuld be modified on ligaands (or meetal clusters), serving as
a active sittes. On the other hand,,
MOFs coulld also be converted into i porouss carbons or
o metal ox xide compossites by calcination att
nitrogen orr air, respeectively, foor catalytic reactions. These MO OF-derived catalysts feature thee
advantages like high specific su a active sites from mother MOFs.
urface area,, porosity and M Moree
importantlyy, stronger interaction ns betweenn guests (i.e. metal or alloy N NPs) and hosts (i.e..
MOF-derivved carbon or metal oxides) maake these catalysts more m efficieent than coonventionall
catalysts w
where guestts are depo osited on hhosts by im mpregnationn. We summ marize the studies off
lignocelluloosic biomasss conversioon includinng (1) dehyydration of sugars suchh as glucosse, fructose,,
and xylose into furanss, (2) hydro ogenation oof furans in
nto fine cheemicals andd (3) sugarss into sugarr
alcohols ussing MOF-dderived cataalysts. The challengess and prospective of M MOF-deriveed materialss
applied in bbiomass connversion aree also descriibed.
