3 Commissioning Manual

Group Group 1
Specify the special steps needed when stating up the Wash-water Recycle unit
Purpose for the first time.
Operating Steps
1. Connect a water hose to the drain valve on the feed pump in the NaCN Area.
2. Follow the “Startup” Operating Procedure, except use water instead of NaCN
Wash-water.
3. Check if clarifier´s level sensor and other controllers work.
Water Test
4. Proof if the reactor recycle has 1/10 of the reactor inlet flow.
5. Check that the valves and piping are not leaking.
6. Ensure that blind flanges are connected were they must be.

7. Ensure that all pre-startup checks have been completed. This includes
making sure that there are no open-ended lines that can cause loss of
containment of cyanide.
Pre-startup 8. Communicate with the NaCN Area that the new unit is ready to be started
review up. They can be alert to any unusual conditions.
9. Review this plan with the operators on-duty to make sure that everything is
ready to start.

10. Follow the “Startup” Operating Procedure until the point where liquid is fed
Startup forward to the HCN Distillation Column.

11. Test of the control systems and the pressure/temperature/level indicators to

verify the status of each one.
12. Test of critical points of the process (Reactor zone 1001PC-1001 TC).
Evaluate the accuracy of this information according with the reported data in
other points of the process.
13. Check pH and temperature controllers (1001RC). In case of error from any of
Safety Systems
them, is required to activate the manual control according with the procedure
Tests
to ensure the safety of all the people and the environment in the plant.
14. Test liquid level in the tank, in order to prevent back flow. In case of achieve
the highest allowed level, close the manual gate located in the inlet, drain the
decanted solids in the tank and verify again the level status of the tank to
resume the operation.

15. Test the maximum flowrate to the unit from the NaCN unit by pumping
16. Test a higher wash water level than 75% in the tank (Clarifier) to prevent
spills, health and environment hazards and equipment damages. Take care
of the solids level in de lowest part of the tank to call the suction tank service
Capacity Tests when will be required. Also, be aware of the solids which could float in the
liquid to remove them with the manual trap.
17. Full the reactor to the maximum allowed, taking care of pH control to prevent
HCN polymerization.
