Week 1 This week was spent on idea generation

I was asked to choose a target audience between 5-
12 or 25-40. I chose 25-45 as I would have more
options and could do a horror genre. I was also asked
to choose 2 productions from short film, music video
or animation. I chose short film and music videos as I
was most confident for these productions.
I have chosen this target audience as I would have
more options on what I could do as a wanted to do a
horror production so that wouldn’t work if I was doing
the 5-12 target audience.
I have chosen to do a music video and short film.
These will allow me to improve a lot as in my short film I
will need good editing and camera work to show the
codes and conventions for horror. I will also need to
choose the perfect sounds and background sounds.
For the music video I will use lots of editing techniques
to make the production more professional and
enjoyable.
The focus groups helped a lot as I got an idea of what
my target audience prefer and this helped me pick
the best ideas.

What genres have you chosen
and why?
What have you learnt from your
secondary research this week?
I found out all of their hobbies and priorities such as
being a good parent, having a good job also there
hobbies like walking, yoga, swimming, watching
programs. Also found out they are the most educated
generation.
This will help me adapt my idea as I can suit it more to
my target audience so they will be able to relate to it
more, I will use non-designer clothes as these where
not important to millennials so wouldn’t make sense to
include in my productions.
It was very useful as they gave a lot of input that
helped me improve my ideas. It helped getting a
point of view from my target audience so I was able
to suit my productions to them more using their ideas
and thoughts into my ideas,
It was quite difficult, I could improve by sending it out
on different social medias such as Facebook and
Instagram, and I could also get friends and family to
email it to each other so I get a wider response for my
FMP.
I should be target audience with costumes and activities
and priorities so they can relate more. The audience I
chose is a lot more mature so i was able to do differnt
genres and narrative which I wouldnt be able to do the 5-
12 year olds.

This week was spent researching codes and
conventions
I chose the horror and drama genre. This is because I
have never tried a horror genre and wanted to try
something new, it was also the easiest to do without
dialogue. For my short film I chose to do the drama
genre because I had a lot of choice of what I could
do in that genre, I thought it was the best for a
storytelling in a music video as my song was about
losing loved ones and overcoming being broke and
near the edge.
I have learnt a lot from my secondary research as I
now know my codes and conventions for both of my
genres. I will implement a lot of these into my
production so it suits the genre more. Also I will use
colour and camera angles codes and conventions in
to show weakness, power, anger etc. Moreover It

How did processing the results of
helped me choose my locations and the best places
to suit my genre, for example isolated house backing
on to woods for my horror short film.
This will influence what I include in my productions as I
now know the best camera angles for both genres so
I will try and include most in my productions to create
the most impact. I will also include the editing style in
both of my productions to suit the codes and
conventions for example in my horror production I will
use more fast paced editing and lots of effects to
create an eerie feeling.
For my horror short film I need to use dark clothes and
a mask or hood for the villain, I will also need to use an
isolated location (somewhere creepy like near
woods) I will also need to include creepy atmosphere
music and jump scare sound effects. Moreover there
needs to be a deadly prop such as a knife. For my
drama music video they normally have people
wearing hoodies and jackets, I will use blue and black
to show my character is depressed. I will use urban
locations as these are in most drama genre
production. For the props I will need a phone, alcohol,
drugs.

This week was spent researching codes and
conventions
This week I have learnt how to write a film with no
dialogue, using less actors, realistic costume, facial
expressions, costume and settings. These are all very
important as you can’t explain anything with
dialogue. I have found out how music is used to
create tension and to show the character is
happy/sad. I also looked into narrative structure and
found the best way to do it for my productions. I also
looked into locations and colour finding the best
locations for both genre and colour to help me show
how the character is feeling or what they are like in
general, for example the villain is in black.
I need to look into my costumes and locations better
so they suit these codes and conventions, I will also
need to put more thought into my camera angles in
my storyboard so that I can make the most out of
facial expressions and camera angles that help to
create panic etc. for both of my productions.

as the same codes and conventions keep coming up
in the different genres so I understand which ones I
need to include. It also helped me realise what I need
to do for my locations, costumes etc.

This week was spent planning your productions
I learnt exactly what to do for my camera angles and
what shots I wanted, I also learnt what locations I
wanted to use as I researched a lot to find the perfect
ones. I also found out who I wanted to be in my
production using the crew list and found out what
props I needed for my production in the props list. The
production schedule help me keep on track and stay
organised, this helped me manage my time so I was
able to get everything done in the time I planned it.
Moreover I learnt that planning is very important to
create a good production as it helps you know
exactly what you are doing.
This will be useful as I will know how to develop my
production. I now realise how important the planning
stage is and I will put a lot of effort into in my next
planning so my production can be the best it can.
I had some issues whilst planning, I had trouble doing
the storyboard as I wasn’t sure what camera angles I
wanted so I watched lots of productions to get
inspiration.

I found it good and very fun, I learnt a lot more angles
and better ways of filming.
Some of my footage way shaky so I had to redo it.

effects. These where very effective and helped bring
my productions to life.

It went very well.
In some of the filming sessions it was raining so I had to
look at the weather and film on a day when it wasnt
raining.
Some of it, a bit was shakey.

This week was spent editing
The editing process went well, I have used lots of editing
techniques I wanted and that where in the codes and
conventions.
Whilst editing I encounted some problems whilst editing
such as create a text bubble I overcame this by watching a
tutorial on youtube.
There is one technique I am trying which is the ghost/blur
effect which is when the there are two clips together
slightly delayed which creates an eerie feeling, this is a
very good editing technique for the horror genre.

This week was spent editing
I found the editing process good but I could have managed
my time better as I had a lot less time to edit my music
video so it wasnt to as much to a high standard as my
short film. Overall I enjoyed it and learnt some new
techniques and got better at editing in general.
I encounered some problems such as having a clip that
was too bright, I fixed this by colour grading and editing
the footage so it was darker.
I was happy with the short film as it fitted the codes and
conventions and the target audience. I thought I edited
and filmed it well aswell. The music video could be
improved as the filming and actual production could have
been a lot better.
I used similar clothes so they could relate more not using
designer clothes. Also using a storyline they would enjoy
and could relate to some of the narrative.
For my music video it could of had more of the parents in
as this is what perspective the audience would see it in.
Moreover they might not be able to relate to the music as
it is some what new. For the short film I thought I did this
well but could include more hobbies or priorities for my
audience so they would relate more.
I have matched the codes and conventions effectivley as I
looked into lots of productions in both genre and found
out the most common and effective codes and convention
to create a convincing production. This helped a lot to
make my production match the genre.
I think my work compares ok to some professional but can
still be improved a lot, I still have a long way to go and
improve to match the professional production. Some
shots and editing I used can be compared which is very
good.
Yes in my music video the camera work, narrative and
song choice could have been improved a lot to suit the
target audience and to also make my production better.
For my short film some of the filming was too dark and
shakey so I need to improve on this.
I have learnt that I am quite confindent with editing but
need to improve my camera work. I also need to improve
my time management so I can get all of my work done.

I chose to do a power point, going through all my research
and how it helped me improve and create my production.
It explained my idea very well and how I used the best
codes and conventions and how it suited my target
audience.
