All About Respect.

Respect is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something. To respect someone, is to

hold them in esteem or honor; to treat each other with politeness and courtesy (Webster).

Respect can be something we feel towards ourselves, towards those in authority, towards the
people around us every day, and it is done well by understanding, listening, and loving.

Psalm 139 : 14-15 says “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s
womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I
know that full well.”

It is important to understand self-respect and learn to first learn to love yourself. Respecting
yourself consist of taking care of your yourself and realizing you were created in God’s image.
When you understand this, it is easier to respect others. We have to understand that God not
only took the time to craft us, but he took the time to craft everyone.
We are all equals and should then treat each other accordingly; with respect.

With all that has been said you must be asking yourself: Why is respect so important?

Receiving respect from others is important because it helps us to feel safe and to express
ourselves.

Being respected by important people in our lives growing up teaches us how to be respectful
toward others.
Respect means that you accept somebody for who they are, even when they’re different from
you or you don’t agree with them.

Respect in your relationships builds feelings of trust, safety, and wellbeing.

Respect doesn’t have to come naturally – it is something you learn.

What does respect look like?

Think about all the different situations in life where you have to get along with others – how do
you know if there’s respect in your relationship?

You feel safe being around each other.

You know it’s ok for both of you to express who you are.

When you disagree you listen to each other and be patient.

You don’t yell or talk over the top of each other.

You can both admit when you’ve made a mistake.

Sometimes we find ourselves not feeling respected by other people, including our family or
friends.

While it’s not always possible to change somebody and make them respect you, there are some
things you can try:
You can show people what respect looks like by being respectful yourself.

You can spend time with people who are respectful and make you feel safe.

Tell the person what they are doing isn’t ok and be specific.

Talk to somebody you trust like a parent, teacher, or counsellor.

Try to understand their point of view.

Give that person a chance to change their behaviour towards you.

It’s ok to end friendships with people if they can’t be respectful and you don’t feel safe around
them. Neither of you are controlling the other person’s choices.

Almost all people in the world want to get respect. If we want to achieve respect then it is very
important that we also respect other people. To get respect, one should understand that he or
she should not ask anybody for respect, but earn it because respect can be earned only.
Someone can do good by doing good work or receiving respect from such activities, which will
in turn create respect for himself from others.

Students, teachers, other members of staff, as we go through our day today, our week and
even the rest of the year I want this to resonate with you:
Respect is the glue that holds your relationships together. Learn ways to be respectful and
know what to do when somebody isn’t respectful towards you.
Thank you.
