Introduction: Adventure Air’s Active Shooter Crisis Communication Plan
Why is this plan important?
Effective communication is crucial when an emergency occurs. With the plethora of
situations that occur at an extreme recreation facility, it is important to be prepared for anything.
Adventure Air Sports has a good reputation for ensuring a fun, family-friendly environment that
we intend on maintaining for the sake of our business and the well-being of the community.

What could happen if this plan is not followed?

In the case of an emergency if the crisis communication plan is not properly executed, it
could result in a detrimental outcome to the company. An ineffectively carried out plan could
harm the public, customers of Adventure Air Sports, resulting in injury or death.

Has a Crisis Happened at Adventure Air Before?

The Kennesaw location of Adventure Air has been open for a little over two years, and
they have been successful. Thankfully, there have not been any reports of gun violence from our
customers or staff at our Kennesaw location. However, because gun violence has become so
prominent in our society, it’s important to have a plan in place in case of a crisis.

Has a Crisis Happened to Similar Companies?

Gun violence is becoming an increasingly common occurrence in our world today. While
Adventure Air has been fortunate enough to not have had a crisis of this nature in the past, there
have been warning signs of gun violence elsewhere. Early this year in February of 2019 a fight
ensued outside of Urban Air, a trampoline park in Nashville. Shots were fired, and while no one
was injured, it does raise concerns about violence and safety precautions. (Bliss, 2019.)
Furthermore, although an internal company gun violence crisis has not been reported a
similar instance has happened in Kennesaw Georgia. Gun violence coming from an internal
stakeholder actually happened earlier this year on April 29, 2019 at a FedEx Facility. A FedEx
Packager went on a rampage wounding six fellow employers and then turned the gun on himself.
The FedEx packager, Geddy Kramer, said he suffered from mental instability, frustration, and
depression. However, as the 19-year-old embarked on a planned massacre at a FedEx facility
north of Atlanta, he expressed no sadness or regrets. (Botelho and Presto, 2014.)
Acknowledgments
By signing this statement, I verify that I have read this crisis communications plan and am
prepared to put it into effect to the best of my ability.

Crisis Rehearsal Dates
Rehearsal Dates will take place once a year. The company will have a tabletop on the last
Thursday of June every year, held by a crisis manager. During simulation or tabletop the crisis
manager reviews the Emergency Action Plan with employees, trains them to make sure everyone
knows what to do before, during, and after an active shooter event. The rehearsal includes a
detailed plan of evacuation routes on all floors, routes, and safe areas in the building. In addition,
the Emergency Action Plan is kept as a physical copy in a convenient location where employees
can gain easy access to it. Digital copies will also be provided to all employees.
Purpose

In the event of an active shooter, we must take immediate action to alert the public and
ensure that the appropriate measures are taken. Our main priority is keeping everyone safe
through the use of effective and honest communication, distributing accurate information to
employees, public, and the media. We emphasize preparedness and ensure that our employees
know how to act during such events, seeing as this is a situation that would likely escalate
abruptly and could harm many individuals.

Objectives

We will make every effort to:

1. Initiate the Crisis Communication Plan as soon as possible (within at least 2 hours).
2. Inform the authorities (local police department) that could help alleviate the situation
immediately.
3. Inform employees and customers of the severity of the situation and the precautions that
they need to take.
4. Keep all parties involved, including the media, regularly updated on factual, confirmed
information.
5. Ensure that the safety of everyone remains the number one priority throughout the crisis
and after.

Media Spokesperson:

Head of PR department for the specific location of Adventure Air sports in Kennesaw, Georgia.

This particular individual was chosen as the spokesperson because he/she has a great
responsibility of maintaining relationships with the locations internal stakeholders. This person is
not oblivious of the staff members of the location and has developed a personable relationship
with each so that they can an attest or vouch each employee’s character. This person also has a
relationship with Kennesaw police department so that it is not difficult for them to obtain
information pertaining to the crisis so that they are able give accurate facts to the publics.

The responsibilities of the spokesperson:

the crisis

Interview tips for spokesperson

• Never answer a question using “no comment”. Uses phrases such as we are still
gathering all the facts and once we have done so there will be notification.
• Do not be afraid of the press.
• Do not speak on what you are not certain of.
• Remain calm. This crisis is can be high stress due to the level of crime this is.
• Stay focused, after you answer the reporter's question--stop. Don't keep talking
between questions.
• Concentrate on what is being said. Don't frame your response before you've heard the
entire question.

Trick Question guide

• Be conscious of leading questions. “How do you feel knowing Adventure Air is
completely at fault for the events that unfolded?” Correct the questioner!
“Adventure Air is not entirely to blame. However, we are in mourning alongside
the community after the tragic events that have taken place.”
• A trick question would definitely be a hypothetical. Watch out for those! Trick
questions can cause spokesperson to answer in a way that can make you sound
biased or unsure.
• If a reporter were to ask you “what if” questions answer with “if our company
were to go through a situation or crisis such as that we will adjust do what is
necessary to make sure our company is prepared to handle. “
o This answer is very general but still is answering the questions at hand.

General Information/Fact Sheet for Active Shooter

Definition of Active Shooter

The agreed-upon definition of an “active shooter” by US government agencies (including
the White House, US Department of Justice, FBI, US Department of Education, US Department
of Homeland Security, and Federal Emergency Management Agency) is, “an individual actively
engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.” In most cases,
active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victim.
Characteristics of an Active Shooter
- Active shooters are likely to engage more than one target. They may target particular
individuals, or they may be intent on killing as many randomly chosen people as possible.
- Active Shooters often go to location with high concentrations of people, such as schools,
theaters, shopping center, or other places of business.
- Active shooters’ intentions is usually an expression of hatred or rage, rather than
financial gain or motives associated with other types of crimes. Thus, police tactics of
containment and negotiation may be an inadequate response to and active shooter.
- Active shooters often have made detailed plans for the attack. In many cases, they
are better armed that the police. They usually have some familiarity with the chosen
location.
- Active shooters often, but not always, are suicidal. Escape from the police is usually
not a priority of an active shooter.
- Most active shooters have not attempted to hide their identity.

Preparation for an active shooter

Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Because active shooter
situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes, before law enforcement arrives on the scene,
individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter
situation.

- If you see suspicious activity, let an authority know right away.

- Many places, such as houses of worship, workplaces, and schools, have plans in place to help
you respond safely. Ask about these plans and get familiar with them. If you participate in an
active shooter drill, talk with your family about what you learned and how to apply it to other
locations.
- When you visit a building such as a shopping mall or healthcare facility, take time to identify
two nearby exits. Get in the habit of doing this.
- Run. Getting away from the shooter or shooters is the top priority. Leave your things behind
and run away. If safe to do so, warn others nearby. Call 911 when you are safe. Describe each
shooter, their locations, and weapons.
- Hide. If you cannot get away safely, find a place to hide. Get out of the shooter’s view
and stay very quiet.
- Fight. Your last resort when you are in immediate danger is to defend yourself.

Blog Posts

BEFORE // 12:35 P.M.

We have recently been informed and here to report that there have been shots fired and possibly
still an active shooter inside of the Adventure Air here in Kennesaw, Georgia. Reports of shots
fired were reported shortly after 12:00 this afternoon. We are unsure and have no status updates
of any individuals inside of Adventure Air as of right now. We do not have much information at
this time other than the shooter was seen in an Adventure Air uniform. No information on any
possible suspects has been released.
DURING // 1:20 P.M.
As reported earlier, a gunman opened fire shortly after 12:00 p.m. inside of Adventure Air here in
Kennesaw, Georgia. Since then there has been another set of shots fired minutes before 1:00p.m.
We do know that a kid was reported shot, as well as a parent and an Adventure Air employee. It
has also been reported and confirmed that the gunman is in fact a current employee at Adventure
Air, but the name of the suspected gunman has not been released. Again, three people have been
reported shot, including a kid and two adults.

AFTER // 2:45
After about 1:00 p.m. is when the shots stopped for good and there was no more shooting.
Shortly after noon today, shots fired from the inside of Adventure Air were reported to the
Kennesaw City police. Police arrived on scene and shortly after, another report of shots fired was

weeks.

Evaluation of Plan Effectiveness:

After the occurrence of a crisis, the following evaluation procedures will occur to ensure
that Adventure Air Sports has adhered to all necessary protocol, and if not, what it can do
differently in the event of a recurring crisis. The evaluation will focus on the media’s coverage of
the event, the community’s perception of the event, and the performance of team members
managing the crisis. It is important to complete this crisis evaluation immediately upon the
conclusion of the crisis so as to most accurately reflect upon the events that have taken place.
Comprehensively considering all aspects of the crisis in this evaluation process will allow
Adventure Air to make any needed adjustments best handle future crises.

1.) Media: Was the media regularly updated throughout the crisis? Was media coverage
of this event holding Adventure Air in a positive or negative light? Were we deemed at fault for
what happened or was this crisis framed as an unforeseeable tragedy? Would further
communications with media outlets have improved the tone of the coverage Adventure Air
received during the crisis?
2.) Community: Were employees and customers informed of the severity of the crisis as it
occurred and after? Was the general public opinion in support of us or antagonizing us after the
crisis? Did any community efforts come to light during the crisis (such as supporting the
donation of funds to a charity related to the crisis)? Could we use this direction the community
has taken to help further foster a positive relationship with them?
3.) Crisis Management Team: Did all crisis management team members complete their
individual communication goals? Was the crisis plan met within a two hour window? Were local
authorities informed and involved in the crisis? Was individual safety prioritized above all else
throughout the crisis? Were all objectives met?
