● Selection of instruments common to an orchestra;

Lesson Objectives:
● Students will demonstrate an understanding of the difference between instrumental
families.
● Students will demonstrate an understanding of the construction of instrument family
types.
● Students will demonstrate an understanding of transposing instruments.

LESSON ACTIVITIES
Introductory Activity: Anticipatory Set (Activity that connects the new concepts/objectives to
previous knowledge):
● Students will listen to a short selection of Beethoven Symphony No. 6 Mvt. V
o Time allotted: 1.5 min

Body of the Lesson


● Students will learn about the different families of the orchestra
o Plan for 100% engagement: Ask questions based on the slides
o Modifications/Accommodations: Allow students to see the instruments in person
if they do not understand the instruments from the pictures.
o Formative Assessment: By a show of hands, see which students can answer which
instruments are from what family.
o Instructional Strategy (type of learning or teacher role occurring): auditory/visual
o Time allotted: 5 minutes

● Students will walk around the back of the room to view some of the instruments they
learned about.
o Plan for 100% engagement: Make sure everyone is up and walking around.
o Modifications/Accommodations: Bring instruments to students seated if they do
not feel comfortable walking around.
o Formative Assessment: Ask students who are interested in specific instruments
what they know about them now.
o Instructional Strategy (type of learning or teacher role occurring):
Visual/Kinesthetic
o Time allotted: 10 minutes

Concluding Activity (final activity of the lesson that that pulls together all of the concepts from
the lesson in a musical success experience)
● Students will participate in a pop quiz on what instruments are in what families.
o Time allotted: 4 minutes

Extensions:
● If time allows, students will continue the pop quiz with verbal questions by family name
rather than by image.
