Reader Final Assessment Summary

Reader: Damien
Grade: 3
Tutor: Anna Folliard
Date: 12/4/19

Quantitative Summary:

Using the Rigby Text Assessment to assess reading level, I found that Damien read a level 30
text with 97% accuracy. This is an independent text level. He had 6 errors, with a self correction
rate of 1:2 self correction rate. He read the text at a rate of 128 WCPM. When answering
comprehension questions he demonstrated a high level of thinking and understanding and was
awarded full points. When retelling the story, he scored a 9/10. This led me to determine that a
level 30 text ranks at an independent level for Damien.

Qualitative Summary:

In relation to the quality of his miscues at a level 30, the student’s omissions maintained
meaning. He omitted words like and, as, and the. Because of this, the syntactic structure of the
sentence was not maintained. He used visual information to help him read words that he was
unfamiliar with. He did not make any substitutions.

In regards to fluency, Damien scored a 4 out of 4 on the Pinnell and Fountas Scale for Assessing
Fluency. He integrated all aspects of fluency by evenly ochestateing rate, phrasing, pausing,
intonation, and stress.

He retold the story with almost full detail. His retelling score was 9, leaving out one of the
character’s problems in the text. He demonstrated a high level of thinking and understanding of
the text while retelling the story and answering comprehension questions.

Reader Summary:

Overall, Damien was motivation to read, write, and learn new information. When our theme was
established, he became more enthusiastic about the tasks He has a high level of prior knowledge
in a lot of science related topics. With that, he has a high level of vocabulary knowledge. When
watching a video about volcanoes, the author confused the term magma with lava. Damien was
quick to acknowledge this mistake. This is one example of the high level of vocabulary
knowledge he has, especially related to science topics. He responded with, at the very least,
willingness to read the texts or complete the tasks at hand. As time went on and I chose texts that
interested him, he was more motivated and enthusiastic to read.

What has the reader accomplished since the first assessment?

In the first assessment, Damien could accurately read high level texts with fluency. But, he didn’t
understand or retain anything he had read. He could not answer the comprehension questions and
his retell score was a 4. My goal for Damien was to build comprehension. So, my instruction was
based around applying the four metacognitive strategies when reading a text: predicting,
clarifying, questioning, and summarizing. In the final assessment, his retelling score was 9. He
demonstrated a high level of thinking and understanding of the text while retelling the story and
answering comprehension questions. It is evident Damien accomplished the goal of building
comprehension.
