THE EFFECTS OF SPANISH COLONIZATION IN THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT

It was written in history that Philippines before the Spanish

colonization had a well-organized form of government. From the very
start, our country had small forms of government known as the barangay
which is headed by a Datu. During the 16th century the Spanish
colonization began giving great change in our country. From the way we
live, the way we make laws and mostly the way on how our government
works. We may have been influenced a lot. Our culture where greatly
affected by their colonization, we began to use ‘kubyertos’ which is
originated by them. We began to convert ourselves and engage in
Christianity. And most of all our government change its way and purpose.
From having laws like Code of Kalantiaw and Code of maragtas to
removing freedoms of Filipinos. We have been treated as a prisoner in our
own country. Laws became favorable for the Spaniards, Filipino leaders
were removed and Spanish priest take over. But then we cannot deny the
fact that they have left with a legacy, we started to adapt their activities
such as fiesta. They build a highly centralized government. We became
one of the great distributor of natural resources such as sugar. They gave
so much changes in a way that our country became profound. Because
of their colonization our church and government connive with each other
which gave greater impact in avoiding social issues and problems. We all
know that as of today laws made such as same sex marriage and divorce
became legal in our country, but our church is against this law. But
because of the Spanish colonization church and government adjust and
became interrelated with each other. Therefore our church and
government works together. This kind of system was bought by the
Spaniards, which in turn gave a good effect in our country. But then they
make this as an opportunity to take advantage of their power. And sadly,
they abuse not just the Filipino people but the Philippines as a country. As
we are colonized for 333 years we have adapted everything they thought
to us and started to lose our own culture and traditions. But in the end
because of our dignity and braveness, we still reach our independence
through the help of our beloved heroes.
