Reflective Essay

In this reflective essay I will describe and detail all the things I learned this semester in

the English 102 class that helped me become a better writer, reader, critical thinker and literary

analyst. First, I will elaborate on some big concepts I learned, what I learned about myself as a

writer, and my strength and weaknesses as a writer. Then, I will discuss on which assignments,

activities, etc. helped me learn these things and what I hope to continue improving upon. Finally,

I will explain how I will apply what I learned in the future both in school and in Professor Batty

English 102 Fall 2019 class to my career. I will discuss in detail what I learned this Fall Semester

in the English 102 class.

First, I will elaborate on some big concepts I learned, what I learned about myself as a

writer and my strength and weaknesses as a writer. Some big concepts that I learned this

semester in the English 102 class were the two theories we learned to use a lens when reading

and writing literature. The theories the class and I learned were Queer theory and Psychoanalytic

theory. I had never heard of these theories and Professor batty taught us how to use them as a

lens when reading and writing literature. Some other big concepts I learned were how to read and

write poetry. Another big concept we learned were the elements of a story which is essentially

what it takes to write a good story. Professor Batty also introduced us to Drama, including what

it is, the format of drama, main elements of drama, etc. We also learned how to read and create

Comics or graphic novels. During the English 102 class I learned a lot about myself as a writer,

this included learning what my strength and weakness in writing were. I learned that I like

writing a lot when I like the topic or the topic really interests me, I really enjoy writing. S, my

strengths in writing are that when I write about a certain topic I commit to it and also I’m really

good at creating stories, writing about things I’m passionate about, and writing all that I want to

write about. My weaknesses with writing are that my organization and points get lost when

writing, I forget to connect the whole essay with the thesis, and I don’t write with a lot of details.

Next, I will discuss on which assignments, activities, etc. helped me learn these things

and what I hope to continue improving upon. When doing class revisions, I started to notice that

I could’ve revised my essay more and fixed some of the things that looked off in my essays. This

is how I noticed and learned what my strength and weaknesses as a writer were. The activities I

enjoyed doing were answering group questions I learned to understand more about were learning

by simply talking to other classmates about it. The graphic novel project was also very helpful

because it helped me learn more about comics/ graphic novel and the hard work and time it takes

to create it. Now, I will discuss what I hope to continue improving upon. I hope to continue in

improving my writing skills and become more organized when writing, go more into detail when

writing, and connect my ideas, the whole essay to my thesis, and heavily improving on my skills

in writing a thesis.

Finally, I will explain how I will apply what I learned in the future both in school and in

Professor Batty English 102 Fall 2019 class to my career. I will apply what I learned this

semester in English 102 in the future in school in multiple ways, I learned a lot of helpful and

useful things for the future in school. The things I learned that I can apply to use in the future in

school are the literary devices, the Queer and psychoanalytic theory and the how to write poetry

and drama lessons. Now, I will elaborate on how I can use what I learned in this class and apply

it to my future career. The Queer and psychoanalytic theory will help so much because I am a

sociology major so it will help a lot towards my future career. Other things I learned while in in

this class that I can use for my future career is working with groups or others, time management,

and how to be organized.

To sum up my reflection on this semester and this class I first elaborated on some

big concepts I learned, what I learned about myself as a writer, and my strength and weaknesses

as a writer. Then, I discussed on which assignments, activities, etc. helped me learn these things

and what I hope to continue improving upon. Finally, I explained how I will apply what I learned

in the future both in school and in Professor Batty English 102 Fall 2019 class to my career. This

reflection helped me discuss in detail what I learned this Fall Semester in the English 102 class.
